I recently read an article in a local newspaper about the Montana Foster Closet and felt moved to help. Did you know that when a child is placed into protective custody, they are many times removed with only the clothes on their back.
The Montana Foster Closet's goal is to alleviate the helplessness felt on day one, and to make sure each child feels seen. They have curated the First Night Bags by age (Baby, Toddler, Youth & Teen) and gender. Each bag contains age appropriate toiletries, essentials and comfort items. The First Night Bags are stored at Child and Family Service offices to provide each caseworker immediate access the moment a child enters protective care. Each bag costs approximately $100 to fill and they have set a goal to fill 400 bags this year.
At the Child and Family Service office in Lewis & Clark County, they also have a clothing closet where the caseworker and/or child can "shop" for NEW Clothing and Shoes.
If you are interested in helping/donating there are multiple ways
-Scan the QR code on the flier below, it will take you to a list of the items they need most and you can purchase for the organization.
-Drop off donations to my office at 800 N. Benton Ave. Helena, MT 59601. There is a bin in the font entryway for the items. As an alternative you can leave a Gift Card or a check made to the Montana Foster Closet with the receptionist during normal business hours. I would also be happy to pick up any donations from you at your convenience (assuming you are in the Helena MT area!)
