WEARING GOGGLES and standing atop the โ€œLittle Red Wagonโ€ was the driver of the bottom-dump wagon made by T.F. Stroud of Omaha. The elevating grader at the right was made by F.C. Austin Mfg. of Chicago. It was pulled by eight horses in a 4-4 pattern. The year was 1909 and the Milwaukee crew was grading for a branch line in Eastern Montana.

The negatives of frontier photographer Evelyn Cameron are held by the Montana Historical Society. If using a PC, click image to enlarge. The view compliments the photo posted yesterday showing equipment from the other side. Text and digital sharpening of photo by Gary Coffrin.

POST TRADER'S STORE, circa 1889, had exclusive rights to sell goods at Fort Keogh, adjacent to Miles City. Built in response to Custerโ€™s 1876 defeat in Eastern Montana, the Fort Keogh six barracks, hospital, bakery, eight stables, three storehouses, granary, various offices, blacksmith/wheelwright shops, library, billiard hall, and several officer quarters. Fort Keogh had 800+ troops and employed hundreds of civilians.

The CHRISTIAN BARTHELMESS photo showed four native American men, two native women, one white girl, and several white men. The store operator was William MacQueen, who had also owned Miles City's best hotel, the MacQueen House. Miles City quickly emerged to supply alcohol, women, and supplies to Fort Keogh. MUMBLE-PEG GAME, 1906. During 1905-12, Texas photographer Erwin E. Smith created the most comprehensive collection of photos of cowboy life before the Automobile Age.

The old outdoor game was also known as mumblety-peg, mumbley-peg, and mumble-the-peg. It involved knife throwing and a small peg that was driven into the ground. The loser had to dig the peg out with his teeth. The lads at the Turkey Track Ranch in Texas were in relatively relaxed postures, and not everyone faced the camera. Decades earlier, Montanaโ€™s L.A. Huffman was among the few who made splendid candid shots. However, informal photos were becoming more common by the early 1900s as camera prices decreased and shutter speeds increased. BILL FOGHT, circa 1904. Evelyn Cameronโ€™s photographs have been the subject of four books, but the view has not appeared in any. The horsehair pad surprised me. To better see Bill Foghtโ€™s gear, click the photo to enlarge if using a PC.

Foght, resting with one cheek off-saddle, worked at various ranches near Terry (Montana), and appeared in several photos by Cameron and John Breum (see my previous post). Foght was a working cowboy when he died at age 71. At the time of the photo, the average male was about 5' 7" or 170 cm tall. Text and Photoshop restoration of image by Gary Coffrin.
