What’s going on in the garden, Clark County? Today's gardening topic: “Summer Pruning: What Should Wait Until Fall?” One of the most common summer gardening mistakes in southern Nevada is heavy pruning during extreme heat.

Leaves and branches provide valuable shade for trunks, stems, and root zones. Removing too much growth during summer can expose previously shaded tissue to intense afternoon sun and lead to sunburn damage.

Safe summer pruning:
• Remove dead, damaged, or diseased branches.
• Remove spent vegetable plants and dispose of diseased material properly.
• Remove suckers and water sprouts from trees when necessary.
• Perform minor shaping only if absolutely needed.

Avoid during summer:
• Heavy thinning of trees and shrubs.
• Major size reduction pruning.
• Severe rose pruning.
• Opening up tree canopies that have been shading trunks and scaffold branches.

Save major pruning projects for fall and winter when temperatures become more favorable and plants can recover more easily. Have you learned this lesson the hard way? Many southern Nevada gardeners have at least one “I wish I hadn’t pruned that in July” story!
