Saturday, Oct. 10: WNC storm & local update 🌧️⛰️

Neighbors, a heads-up for Hendersonville, Asheville and surrounding mountain communities: A flood watch is in effect for Asheville and 13 mountain counties through Sunday afternoon. The heaviest rain may fall along the Blue Ridge Escarpment, with 5–10 inches possible. Above 3,500 feet, wind gusts could reach 60 mph; lower elevations may see gusts of 45–50 mph. Flooding and landslide or rockslide risk may increase, especially near streams and on steep slopes.

📣 Saturday changes: Hendersonville Farmers Market, Waynesville’s Church Street Art and Craft Show, Apple Country Engine & Tractor Association Fall Harvest Day in Mills River, Black Mountain Home’s fall festival and open house, and Tryon International Saturday Night Lights activities and vendor market are canceled. Pink Platoon 5K is postponed; the Coca-Cola CSI3 Grand Prix is moved to 8 a.m. Pisgah National Forest sites are closed.

⛽ North Carolina’s gas tax is suspended Oct. 10–Nov. 30.

🏠 Property prep: secure outdoor furniture and loose items, clear gutters and downspouts, check sump pumps and crawlspace drainage, and keep phones charged. Avoid flooded roads, never drive through high water.

⚖️ A judge ruled condo buyers cannot block the $36 million sale of the failed Fairmont Heritage Place The Cedars project in downtown Hendersonville.
🏗️ Asheville City Council will consider the Costco Enka rezoning Tuesday, Oct. 13, with a public hearing. Plans call for a 168,258-square-foot warehouse, fuel station, and 914 parking spaces.
🌊 Asheville plans to remove Lake Craig Dam as part of ongoing Helene recovery work.
🏥 Mission Hospital and HCA Healthcare reached an agreement in principle to settle a major antitrust lawsuit.
🎖️ A historic marker honoring Buffalo Soldier Walter Bryson will be unveiled today at 4 p.m. at Oakdale Cemetery in Hendersonville.

🏡 Helene recovery: Henderson County has begun federal buyout closings for 49 approved properties, with $26.1 million awarded. The land is planned to become permanent greenspace. Some residents at the Cottages at Cypress Run are still questioning why repaired, inhabited homes were included.

🏙️ The Fairmont Heritage Place The Cedars receivership hearing is today in downtown Hendersonville. The receiver and lender are pushing for an immediate sale as the court considers next steps.

👀 Development watch: Asheville’s Planning and Zoning Commission reviews the proposed Costco project in Enka tomorrow, Oct. 7. Meanwhile, the 288-unit Upward Road proposal continues to draw questions about flooding, traffic, and farmland.

🐟 A hopeful note: After the Lake Craig Dam breach, native fish, including smallmouth bass and russet darters, have moved upstream near Asheville for the first time in generations.
