Nine states have a 0% income tax rate. If you're a remote worker and you're not living in one of them you're paying a tax you don't have to pay.

And I say that as someone who made this decision deliberately.

I'm based in Tennessee. Zero state income tax. It's not an accident that a disproportionate number of high earners, remote workers, and retirees have been moving to Florida, Texas, Tennessee, and Nevada over the last decade. The math on that decision is not complicated.

Here's what zero state income tax actually means in real dollars.

On a $100,000 income California takes 9.3% in state income tax. That's $9,300 a year. New York takes up to 10.9%. Oregon hits 9.9%.

A remote worker earning $150,000 in California is paying $13,950 a year in state income tax that a remote worker doing the exact same job from Nashville, Austin, or Tampa pays zero on.

Over 10 years at that income level that's $139,500 in state taxes that one person paid and the other didn't.

That's a down payment. That's a fully funded retirement account. That's a decade of Roth IRA maxing with money left over.

Now here's the honest caveat.

State income tax isn't the only number that matters. Some zero income tax states make up the revenue through higher property taxes, higher sales taxes, or higher costs of living in desirable markets. Texas has some of the highest property taxes in the country. Florida's insurance costs have surged dramatically.

The full picture requires looking at total tax burden not just the income tax line.

But for remote workers with location flexibility the income tax comparison is the place to start.

Running that math before you renew your lease in a high tax state is one of the highest ROI hours you'll spend this year.
