Could long-term radon exposure leave a detectable biological signature in blood?

A new study is exploring that question using metabolomics and chemical exposomics — approaches that allow researchers to examine large numbers of small molecules and chemical features in biological samples.

Kalia and colleagues analyzed plasma samples from 80 participants and compared those biological patterns with reconstructed estimates of long-term radon exposure.

They identified 124 metabolic features correlated with estimated radon exposure, including 41 positive correlations. Patterns involving fatty-acid metabolism, linoleate metabolism and amino-acid metabolism were among the findings that emerged from the analysis.

But this is very early-stage research.

The study does not establish a blood test for radon exposure, and the researchers did not directly measure each participant’s long-term individual radon dose. Some of the strongest associations also involved metabolic features that have not yet been identified.

So why is this interesting?

One of the persistent challenges in radon research is reconstructing long-term exposure.

A radon measurement can tell us about concentrations in a building during a particular period. Residential histories and environmental models can help researchers estimate past exposure. But neither necessarily tells us the biological exposure an individual accumulated over many years.

Researchers are now asking whether biological signals could eventually add another piece to that puzzle.

The authors describe these metabolomic and exposomic signatures as potential biomarkers of long-term radon exposure — findings that now require further identification, validation and mechanistic research.

This is not a new radon test.

It is an intriguing new research question:

Could biology eventually help us understand long-term radon exposure in ways environmental measurements alone cannot?

The EPA Map of Radon Zones was created to help national, state, and local organizations:
• target resources
• support radon awareness efforts
• and implement radon-resistant building codes.

But the map was NOT designed to determine whether an individual home should be tested for radon.

Homes with elevated radon levels have been found in all three EPA zones.

That means:
high-risk counties can have low homes,
and low-risk counties can still have homes with elevated radon.

Every home is different.

Women in areas where radon levels were high had a significantly higher risk of being diagnosed with ovarian cancer compared to women in low radon zones. This link was especially strong for serous ovarian cancer. Women living in high radon areas had a 38 percent higher relative risk of being diagnosed with this type of cancer.
The risk of dying from ovarian cancer was also 31 percent higher in women who lived in high radon areas.
