Today was a special day for the Quartermaster Corps and Fort Lee, Virginia.

I was honored to witness the transition from the 16th Quartermaster Regimental Command Sergeant Major, Tonya Sims, to the 17th Quartermaster Regimental Command Sergeant Major, Norman Carey.

CSM Sims leaves behind a legacy of leadership, inspiration, and service. Few leaders can motivate and connect with Soldiers the way she does, and her impact will be felt for years to come.

CSM Carey is a longtime friend, a combat-tested Warrior, Army Ranger, and one of the finest Command Sergeants Major I have ever known. He is the kind of leader Soldiers trust, respect, and willingly follow. Fort Lee and the Quartermaster Corps are fortunate to have him on the team.

Two exceptional leaders. One proud Army.

Growing up, my father used to tell me:

"If you hang around five idiots, you'll become the sixth."

My Spanish speaking friends have a similar saying:

"Dime con quién andas, y te diré quién eres."
(Tell me who you hang out with, and I will tell you who you are.)

There is a lot of truth in both.

Research in psychology and behavioral science shows that attitudes, habits, expectations, and even success tend to spread through our social circles. Whether it's health, finances, leadership, personal growth, or mindset, the people around us influence how we think and what we become.

That does not mean your future is determined by your friends alone. It does mean that your circle matters.

The people around you can either challenge you to grow, hold you accountable, and inspire you to be better, or they can make your goals harder to achieve.

One of the things I love most about the Power of 9's is being surrounded by leaders who have dedicated their lives to service, mentorship, excellence, and helping others succeed. When you spend time with people who lift others up, share knowledge, and lead by example, good things happen.

Take a look at your circle today. Are the people around you helping you become the person you want to be?

The Retirement Math Many Military Leaders Never Do 🤔💰

One thing I’ve learned after retiring from the military and working with hundreds of military families is this:

A lot of people assume that reaching the senior ranks automatically means you’ll be financially comfortable in retirement.

The reality can be very different.

Let’s look at a simple example.

A retired E-8 or E-9 with 26 years of service may receive roughly $4,500 to $5,000 per month in retirement pay before deductions.

A retired O-5 or O-6 may receive significantly more, but the same lesson applies.

After taxes, TRICARE premiums, dental coverage, Survivor Benefit Plan elections, and other common deductions, the actual take home amount is often much lower.

And before anyone asks, this example does NOT include VA disability compensation because disability is not guaranteed.

Now compare that retirement income to a fairly common monthly budget in today’s economy:

Mortgage on a $500,000 home: $2,900

Car payment: $750

Car insurance: $175

Utilities: $300

Cell phones: $150

Internet: $75

Gas: $250

Groceries: $800

Life insurance: $100

Total: Approximately $5,500 per month

And that doesn’t include:

Home repairs

Travel

Grandkids

Eating out

Entertainment

Emergency expenses

Saving and investing

The point isn’t that military retirement isn’t valuable.

It absolutely is.

The point is that retirement alone may not provide the lifestyle many people expect, especially when retirement can last 30 years or more.

That’s why so many successful military retirees continue working, start businesses, invest, teach, consult, sell real estate, or pursue a second career.

The pension is a great foundation.

It just shouldn’t be the entire plan.

Question for the group:

How many years before retirement should military leaders begin seriously preparing financially for their next chapter?

And without VA disability, what monthly income do you believe is needed today to live comfortably?

I’m curious to hear your thoughts and experiences. 🇺🇸💰

What’s something in life you genuinely love doing so much that it never really feels like work?

For the past decade, I’ve probably been offered jobs or business opportunities almost every week. Some really good ones too. Truth is, I’m always grateful and honestly humbled when people think enough of me to reach out.

But I genuinely love Real Estate.

I love helping families. I love the conversations, the problem solving, the relationships, and being there for people during major life moments. It never really feels like work to me.

Over the years, instead of trying to take every opportunity for myself, I started connecting people with others in my network who I trust. Good people. Hard workers. People trying to build something for their families too.

I never really did it expecting anything back. I just believed helping people mattered.

Funny thing is, the more I helped others win, the more my own life and business continued to grow.

That’s probably one of the biggest lessons I’ve learned in life. You do not have to chase everything for yourself to be successful. Sometimes helping others get where they need to go ends up opening doors for you too.

Over the years, one thing I’ve really noticed is how much people change depending on who is in the room.

One on one, people are usually genuine, relaxed, funny, honest, and real. Then a superior, executive, senior leader, or certain group walks in and suddenly the entire personality changes instantly. 😂

The voice changes.
The mannerisms change.
The vocabulary gets real impressive all of a sudden.
You’re sitting there thinking… “Who is this person?” 🤦‍♂️

Back in the day we used to call that being fake or phony.

One thing I’m proud of is I’ve never felt the need to become somebody else to fit into a room. I move in a lot of different spaces these days. Military circles, business leadership, real estate, corporate environments, community events, networking groups, and everywhere in between.

What I value more than anything is authenticity.

Be real.
Be respectful.
Be yourself.

People can feel when someone is genuine and they can definitely feel when someone is performing. The older I get, the less impressed I am with titles, status, or people trying to sound important. I’m way more impressed by the person who treats everyone the same and stays grounded no matter who walks into the room.

Like Popeye said…
“I yam what I yam.” 😂🇺🇸

Your Name Is Your Brand

One thing I wish more people understood when they transition out of the military… your title retires. Your reputation doesn’t.

A lot of people think the world is just waiting to hand them opportunities because of what they did in uniform. I hate to say it… but civilian life will humble you real quick 😁

When I got out, I had to completely rebrand myself.

I went from Soldier to “Scott Morgan The Real Estate Guy.”

And trust me… it wasn’t smooth.

My first year out was rough. Real rough. Family issues, stress, uncertainty, trying to figure out who I was outside the military. There were days I felt like I hit rock bottom.

But I refused to unpack and live there.

While some people were sitting at home talking about what they USED to do… I was cleaning the real estate office, filing paperwork, putting signs in yards, doing open houses nobody showed up to, and learning the business from the ground up.

Man listen… my ego got punched in the face a few times 😂

I got dismissed.
Rejected.
Laughed at.
Targeted.
Had local agents trying hard to make sure I didn’t succeed.

At the same time, I was teaching at the Combined Logistics Captain Career Course, helping shape future leaders while still trying to figure out my own next chapter.

I also learned real quick not to put all my eggs in one basket.

So while building my real estate career, I opened a barbershop and beauty salon too. I was hustling from every angle trying to create opportunities, build stability, and figure out what success looked like outside the military.

Slowly but surely things started changing.

The same guy people doubted became one of the top REALTORS in Virginia.
The same guy people laughed at built relationships and trust all across the community.
The same guy who started at the bottom rebuilt his entire life one day at a time.

Then over a decade later, after my real estate career was already on fire, something different happened.

The Power of 9’s was born.

And honestly… this one hits different.

This isn’t about business for me.

It’s about purpose.

It’s a way for senior enlisted leaders from every branch of service to come together, share stories, mentor, guide, laugh, reconnect, help one another, and remind each other we still matter long after the uniform comes off.

A place where experience still has value.
A place where wisdom gets passed down.
A place where relationships and respect matter more than politics or ego.

The Power of 9’s became my way of giving back from everything I’ve learned through success, failure, leadership, mistakes, transition, family struggles, business, and life.

And the crazy part is… some of the strongest connections and friendships I’ve built happened after retirement, not during it.

Because here’s the thing…

I didn’t rely on my past.
I blended my military experience into my future.

The discipline.
The consistency.
The ability to work under pressure.
The networking.
The leadership.
The resilience.

That became my brand.

People don’t just buy houses from me.
They trust me because they know exactly who I am.

A Veteran.
A connector.
A community leader.
A guy who genuinely gives a damn about people.

Your brand is built by what you consistently do when nobody is clapping for you.

Not the title you used to have.

Some of y’all are transitioning right now wondering what’s next. Here’s my advice:

Stay humble.
Be coachable.
Outwork people.
Treat people right.
Keep showing up.
And stop being afraid to start at the bottom again.

That’s not failure.
That’s rebuilding.

And sometimes rebuilding creates something even stronger than before.

Power of 9’s United and Strong 🇺🇸
