In this home I found a dead snake on the floor of the firebox in the family room fireplace. I note it, then go to check the damper. There was another dead snake at the damper handle. I notify my client and his fiancee. A few minutes later the client comes to me and says we are not purchasing this house. Wonder how many more were concealed. Spiders are OK. Snakes are not my thing.

One of the things I really enjoy about inspecting homes is doing the older homes. They are always interesting and sometimes bring back memories of my childhood. This 1955 home still had two bathrooms with the original tile and they were in excellent condition. The home I grew up in Montreal was built in 1954 and had the same style of tile and fixtures at the sink. The only difference is our wall tile was flamingo pink with black border tile. Those old bathrooms with the tile laid in real mortar were built like tanks.

I recently did a post-closing inspection on a home a few minutes from my office. There were two recently installed electrical panels covered by enough trim that I could not get into the left one. Instead of simply disclaiming it as many inspectors do, I arranged to come back the next day with a tool that allowed me to reach the obstructed fasteners. Didn't have the tool so I purchased one for a few dollars and went back the following afternoon.

So glad I did. After getting the panel cover off, the thermal scanner showed the range breaker with temperatures at the breaker body and the connections in the vicinity of 300 degrees. A fire waiting to happen. And this on a panel that had been installed in the past three years or so.

These dead snakes in the family room fireplace along with the wet rear wall in the basement rec room and bathroom were not conducive to the buyer moving forward on this one. When the buyer asked me what if the snakes had been alive my response was you would have found me in the front yard immediately.

Sometimes we see things in a house that just make you want to laugh. This sump is full of water & the pump is not working. Right next to it are three fishing rods. Naturally I had to wonder about the scenario.

Yet again, we see some interesting electrical issues. The service entrance cable at this house has been badly damaged. Instead of replacing and properly securing the cable the damaged cable was simply secured at the top and most of it is hanging away from the wall of the house. The cable is so badly damaged that water can get into it. The drip loops at the connection to the utility wires are not all present.
In the basement of the same house improper wiring additions were made at a light fixture. All of this is DIY, improper and unsafe.
Electricity brings out the creativity in people who have no idea what they are doing.

Exterior electrical sub panels should always be opened up. It's not only electrical deficiencies that are found. Fortunately these wasp nests were old.
