As colder weather approaches, now is a good time to check your fireplace. There can be a lot of debris that build up above the damper. Clean out ashes, open and close the damper and look at the exterior of the chimney for cracks and loose bricks.

How has all this wonderful rain been? We have been receiving calls and fielding questions about water runoff issues. If you are going to have it, now is the time you will see it at its worst. Take a minute to peek in your crawlspace or walk the perimeter of your basement to look for signs of water
The first photo show a house with a grading issue. The issue here is of course the run off of the adjoining slope. You can't do much about the slope but you can set up swales drains and barriers to redirect the runoff.
Another common issue is with drainpipes from gutters that drain directly next to the foundation. This is very bad and can erode beneath the foundation and lead to some very serious repair issues. One solution is a french drain. Picture #2 shows a properly routed french drain system. You can also run you pipes to the street or a rainwater collection system.
This is the season to make notes for spring projects.
Please consult with you local building codes before correcting your drainage problems
