Today, I had the privilege of donating blood at a Red Cross blood drive, at Union Baptist Church, Trenton NJ, dedicated to supporting patients living with sickle cell disease.
Sickle cell disease disproportionately affects the Black community, and blood transfusions are a critical part of treatment. Here’s why donations from Black donors make such a powerful impact:
✅ Better Matching: Patients with sickle cell often require blood that closely matches their unique antigen profile. Blood from donors of similar ethnic backgrounds reduces complications and improves outcomes.
✅ Fewer Transfusion Reactions: Closely matched blood lowers the risk of alloimmunization, which can make future transfusions safer and more effective.
