During a hurricane keep all windows completely closed and secured.

The belief that opening windows helps “equalize pressure” during a hurricane to prevent the house from exploding is a widespread—and dangerous—myth.

Why You Should Keep Windows Closed
1. Internal Pressurization Creates Roof “Uplift”
When hurricane-force winds move over your house, low pressure naturally builds up over the roof. If you open a window on the windward side of the house, high-speed wind rushes indoors with nowhere to go. This turns your home into a giant balloon:
Pushing Up: The air rushing inside pushes up against the ceiling and roof.
Pulling Up: The storm winds passing over the outside pull up on the roof.
Combining upward pressure from inside with suction from outside is the leading cause of roofs blowing off during severe storms.

2. Structural Failure Cascades
Once a roof detaches or walls blow out from internal wind pressure, the overall structural integrity of the home collapses. Keeping the outer envelope of your house sealed is your best defense against structural failure.

3. Flying Debris and Water Damage
An open window invites rain driven by 100+ mph winds into your home. This destroys drywall, furniture, and electrical systems within minutes. It also opens a path for flying debris to enter at high velocity.

Pro Tip: Close Interior Doors Too
In addition to locking all exterior windows and doors, close every interior door (bedrooms, bathrooms, closets). If an outer window does happen to break from flying debris, closed interior doors help compartmentalize the incoming air pressure, reducing the total uplift force pushing up against your roof by up to 30%.

Do this:
✅ Keep ALL exterior windows and doors tightly sealed.
✅ Close every single interior door to help compartmentalize air pressure.
✅ Stay away from windows during the storm.

Stay safe out there, everyone! 🌪️ Lock down and stay inside.
