WHAT IS LOCALS’ SUMMER? 🌴☀️

While everyone back home in the Philly area is starting to gear up for fall — and what comes after it 😬❄️ — here on Hilton Head Island, we’re gearing up for what we call Locals’ Summer.

September. October. November.

The crowds thin out. The humidity backs off. The weather is gorgeous. The water is still warm, the golf is fantastic, the fishing is some of the best of the year…

…and the beach becomes an all-day occurrence.f

No rushing out before it gets too hot. No packing it up by lunchtime.

You bring the chairs, the cooler and maybe a book and realize somewhere around 4:00 that you’ve basically spent the entire day there.

This is the time of year when those of us who live on Hilton Head remember exactly why we live here.

And while you’re pulling the sweaters out of storage up north, we’re entering one of our favorite seasons. They call it fall. We call it Locals’ Summer.

Island Therapy: Sunrise, Sunset & a Zip Code in the Atlantic 🌅🌴

There is something very satisfying about bookending your day with the sky. 🌅🌇

Morning sunlight gives your body a pretty strong hint that it is, in fact, morning — which is helpful because apparently our internal clocks need more supervision than we do. Getting outside early can support your circadian rhythm, daytime alertness, and sleep cycle.

Sunset does the opposite. It is nature’s way of dimming the lights and suggesting that perhaps you stop answering emails, stop doomscrolling, and stop pretending you are going to accomplish one more productive thing at 8:47 p.m.

And then there is the less scientific benefit: for a few minutes, you are forced to stand still and look at something beautiful. No notifications. No errands. No one asking what’s for dinner. Just the sky putting on a completely free show.

Honestly, if your doctor ever prescribes moving to an island and watching the sunrise and sunset every day, I would not seek a second opinion. I would start packing. 🌴

🌊 Tiny Waves, Big Fun! ☀️👣

If you have toddlers don’t sleep on Hilton Head Island. One of the sweetest things about Hilton Head’s beaches is how gentle the waves can be, especially at low tide. The island’s wide, gradually sloping shoreline and shallow offshore waters help soften the surf before it reaches the beach.

At low tide, the ocean pulls back and leaves behind a huge stretch of firm, shallow water—perfect for splashing, running and discovering tiny shells. On calm days, the waves can be gentle enough for even a two-year-old to enjoy with a grown-up close by.
