Scam Alert from HPD and LCSO….
🚨 SCAM ALERT – Please Share 🚨
The Hinesville Police Department has recently taken reports from citizens who were targeted by scammers posing as City of Hinesville and Liberty County probation officers.
In these cases, the caller falsely claims that you, or someone you know, is on probation and facing arrest. The scammer then demands payment to “avoid jail” or “clear a warrant.”
❗ This is a scam.
Please note: While callers have claimed to be Liberty County probation officers, we are advising the public based on reports made to Hinesville Police Department.
🔎 How the Scam Works
• Caller claims there is a probation violation or active warrant
• Threatens immediate arrest
• Demands payment right away
• Requests money through gift cards, prepaid cards, wire transfers, or payment apps
• May “spoof” a legitimate phone number to appear official
🚫 What Law Enforcement Will NOT Do
• Demand payment over the phone
• Ask for gift cards or electronic transfers
• Require immediate payment to avoid arrest
• Instruct you to stay on the phone while sending money
✅ What You Should Do
• Hang up immediately
• Do NOT send money
• Do NOT provide personal information
• Contact the agency directly using a verified phone number
• Report the incident to your local law enforcement agency
Please share this post to help protect others in our community, especially elderly residents who are often targeted in scams like this.
