Benjamin Banneker, a self-taught African American mathematician, astronomer, and surveyor, played a crucial role in the early development of Washington, D.C. In 1791, when Pierre Charles L'Enfant, the French architect originally tasked with designing the city, abruptly left and took the city's plans with him, Banneker used his photographic memory to help recreate the lost designs.
Working as part of a surveying team led by Major Andrew Ellicott, Banneker helped map out the boundaries of the new capital. His expertise in astronomy allowed him to make precise calculations needed for the surveying work. Beyond his contributions to Washington, D.C., Banneker also published almanacs and corresponded with Thomas Jefferson, challenging him on the hypocrisy of slavery.
Banneker’s work ensured the project continued despite setbacks, and his role stands as a testament to Black excellence in early American history.
