Hi, my name is Donna Antonucci and I started an apiary during the pandemic in Mount Olive, NJ. I did it to give back. Honey bees are the best pollinators we have and they are in trouble. Bees are responsible for pollinating 65% of our food supply. A 2021 study showed that if beekeepers stopped tending their bees, in 2 to 3 years we would have no bees. They are being attacked by the Varroa virus, American Foul Brood. The Red Lantern Fly is attacking their habit by killing vegetation. The plot where I have the apiary is loaded with Ash Trees. The Ash Tree is being attacked by the Emerald Ash Borer.
I need help clearing the lot of these failing trees and want to replace them with the Japanese Black Pine and other bee-supportive plants. Bees like the Japanese Black Pine not for its pollen but for the sap. They use the sap to create propolis - basically, the glue that holds the hive together. I also would like to expand the shed with another section. I use a galvanized steel shed because I don't want to buy plastic. Cutting down the trees was an unexpected expense and I would like to get it done so I can focus on beekeeping. Beekeeping is a detailed, labor-intensive activity and I have to get rid of the trees to make the yard safe. Please help.
For donors who donate $20 or more, I have a fun, informative poster I'd like to offer. Share it with your kids. Post it to show you support the bees. Please scan the QR code and contact me through my Instagram page. To receive the poster, you cannot be an anonymous donor. Send me a message through Instagram and I'll match up your donation and we'll arrange how to get you a poster.
