Have you ever been to Eklutna Lake AK?
I recently spent two nights camping there for my first time. The reason I moved to Alaska is for these moments, spent having a fire on the beach with a glacier breeze dancing through the fall leaves. Watching the waning moon rise over the Chugach Mountains and illuminate the glassy lake waters while leaning against a perfectly carved piece of driftwood.
Waking up to camp coffee and pancakes, preparing to bike along the 12.9-mile trail along the lake with my new husband leading the way, pushing me to keep up. I find my mind drifting to a time when this valley was a glacier and thankful for the gravel left behind that makes this trail amazing despite the September rains beating it down. Then my back wheel hits a small boulder. I feel it, personally, wishing my hard tail bike had hydraulics and motor. Focus on the next turn and what thrills and surprises will greet you. Erosion keeps it exciting as parts of the trail get narrow with 20ft drops down to the soft teal blue waters. Every now and again I remember to look up at the towering mountains above, bright with fresh snow. The leaves on the trail are still aluminous. As if you could ride at night, and they would set the trail aglow. Soon they will turn dark and the snow level will descend and we hope to return and finish the second half of the ride. 14 miles this time, 26 next time.
