Thank you for inviting us to speak about the prevention of domestic violence. It is a subject close to all our hearts.

Thank you for inviting us to speak about the prevention of domestic violence. It is a subject close to all our hearts.

Last night, I was pleased the Mayor issued, at my request, a Proclamation recognizing the month of October as Domestic Violence (DV) Awareness month. I was grateful for the attendance of Allison Dearing--executive director of One Place Metro, a resource for people experiencing domestic abuse--and her team.

I also invited my friends Johnny and Liz Montgomery to speak from the perspective of a family who has lost a daughter to DV. Our city has lost police officers to the effects of DV. In my comments, I noted that no community is immune from the destruction caused by family violence and many more struggle with this than is known by the public. We want people to know there are places to go for help, both for adults and children. No one is alone in this fight against the brokenness that sometimes destroys families.

During the time of Covid-19, from February 2019 to 2020, DV incidents tripled. Police responding to reports of a domestic disturbance know they are about to engage in the "most most dangerous calls handled by the police." (https://www.llrmi.com/articles/legal_update/2015_johnson_domesticviolence/) I hope that raising awareness of this important issue will lead people to seek help when they are engaged in this type of relationship.

You for inviting us to promote the awareness of domestic violence. Something that is close to all our hearts.
