Bleak House Books: Check out this beautiful bookstore in the charming village of Honeoye Falls just steps from my office.
Open this Saturday at 12 p.m.
I was shelving books on our fiction shelf the other day, which is organized alphabetically by author’s last name. When I got to the ‘L’ section, I saw books by writers who have been a familiar presence on our bookshelves since our days in Hong Kong. Min Jin Lee. Doris Lessing. Primo Levi.
But someone was missing. And I couldn’t really put my finger on it until I saw that on the shelf sat one lonely, used copy of Harper Lee’s ‘Go Set a Watchman’. And then it occurred to me. Where in the hell were our copies of ‘To Kill a Mockingbird’?! I was positive I had included them in our opening book order. I looked through our boxes in storage. Maybe there was a box of Harper Lee hiding somewhere that no one found. No dice. Then I checked our inventory system and our opening order documents. And whaddya know? I never ordered the damn book!
If there were ever a moment of shame and embarrassment for Ye Olde Bookseller, this was one of them. So I quickly placed an order with our friends at Harper for a dozen-plus copies of ‘To Kill a Mockingbird’ in various editions. And they arrived yesterday. Now I can rest easy knowing Harper Lee has a prominent place in our fiction section.
To Kill a Mockingbird is, however, only one of many books Jenny and I have added to our collection since last weekend. If you are wondering what other books we have in store for you, dear reader, please consider visiting the bookshop this coming weekend, July 8th and 9th, Saturday and Sunday. We will be OPEN from 12 to 6 PM on BOTH DAYS.
