Today, Ward Village is the home to luxury condos and various retail stores. But did you know the history behind the name?
Ward Village was named after Victoria Ward. Victoria was born in 1846 and grew up in a wealthy family. She was well-educated and fluent in Hawaiian and English. Socially, her family was well respected by the local residents and often hung out with members of the royal family. Victoria married her husband when she was 19 years old, and later gave birth to seven daughters. Victoria and her husband’s shrewd business skills allowed them to subsequently buy land parcels one after another. About 100 acres of land became their family farm, in the area known as Kakaako today.
Victoria's husband died at the age of 53. In the following years, under the leadership of Victoria, she continued to expand the family business with her seven daughters and created Victoria Ward Ltd.
Victoria was good friends with Queen Lili’uokalani at the time and has always been a supporter of the monarchy and was furious when the US government overthrew the royal family. She is said to have barred people from speaking English in her presence. Victoria, who so loved Hawaii, specifically asked to be laid on a bed draped with the Hawaiian flag when she passed away in 1935.
