🍎 BIG NEWS FOR OAHU TEACHERS! 🏫✨
An exciting $80 million affordable workforce housing project called Kumelewai Hale is officially in the works on the Mililani High School campus! Designed specifically to help recruit and retain public school teachers, this pilot project aims to provide a safe, affordable stepping stone for educators.
-The Breakdown: 95 rental units (56 one-bedroom and 39 two-bedroom) reserved for DOE teachers and staff, with strict priority given to teachers.
-Built for Teachers: Based on actual feedback from educators, the building will feature a teacher collaboration resource room, a fitness center, a pet-friendly policy, an open courtyard, and even an on-site copier/laminating machine!
-The Goal: It’s designed as a launchpad. Rents will be below maximum allowable limits to help teachers (especially those fresh out of school) save money, build financial literacy, and eventually transition into buying their own homes.
-Timeline: Permit applications are happening this year, construction is slated to start in late 2027, and teachers are expected to move in by late 2029.
If this pilot is a success, the Hawaii School Facilities Authority plans to replicate this awesome concept across the entire state! 🙌
