Florida Lawmakers Debate Property Tax Elimination
Proposal Could Reach 2026 Ballot, Requiring 60% Voter Approval
The Florida House Select Committee on Property Taxes will meet September 22–23 to debate statewide cuts or elimination.
The Florida House Select Committee on Property Taxes will meet September 22–23 to debate statewide cuts or elimination.
In spring 2025, House Speaker Daniel Perez of Miami created the committee to study property taxes.
Members held two meetings in May 2025 to begin discussions on reducing or removing the tax.
Support for the Proposal
Governor Ron DeSantis and Chief Financial Officer Blaise Ingoglia support the plan.
Ingoglia said, “People are concerned with the level of property taxes they are paying. Local officials say their budgets are already cut to the bone, but I can tell you that is not the case.”
Path to Ballot
Lawmakers want a constitutional amendment on the November 2026 ballot.
The measure requires 60% voter approval to pass.
Ongoing Reviews
Audits of county finances are underway for 2021 through 2025.
Palm Beach County is one focus of those reviews. The findings aim to highlight government spending patterns.
Role of Property Taxes
Property taxes fund schools, police, fire services, and infrastructure. They also support matching grants from state and federal programs.
Concerns About Revenue Replacement
The Florida Policy Institute warns that elimination without a replacement could undermine public services.
Analysts estimate the state sales tax would need to rise from 6% to at least 14% to cover the gap.
That increase could affect low- and middle-income households.
Renters would not see property tax savings but would pay more in consumption taxes.
Local Government Warnings
Local officials warn that immediate service cuts could follow.
They also say infrastructure projects could face long delays if revenues shrink.
Wider Economic Impacts Under Study
Lawmakers commissioned studies to model effects on small businesses, tourism, and income gaps.
Other states have explored property tax reductions. Florida’s proposal remains among the most aggressive.
State and local officials continue to review fiscal and economic trade-offs.
Can they survive without property tax?
