Keeping Your Financial Data Safe During Tax Season
Tax season is already stressful enough. Unfortunately, itās also one of the busiest times of year for scams, phishing attempts, and stolen financial information. When sensitive data is being emailed, uploaded, and stored more frequently, attackers know people are more likely to be rushed or distracted.
Youāll start seeing two familiar faces in our weekly graphics:
⢠Squish, our resident troublemaker, represents the scams, bad habits, and risky shortcuts that can lead to compromised accounts or stolen data.
⢠Java, our vigilant protector, represents the smart security habits that help prevent those problems before they start.
A few practical steps that can significantly reduce your risk during tax season:
⢠Be skeptical of urgency. Emails or texts claiming thereās a problem with your taxes, refund, or account often rely on panic to get you to click. Government agencies and financial institutions do not demand immediate action via email or text.
⢠Protect your email first. Email is the gateway to most financial accounts. If itās compromised, everything else is easier to access. Use a strong, unique password and enable two-factor authentication.
⢠Avoid password reuse. Using the same password across multiple accounts means one breach can expose everything. Password managers can help keep this manageable.
⢠Keep systems and software updated. Updates arenāt just about new featuresāthey often fix known security vulnerabilities that attackers actively exploit.
⢠Use secure networks only. Public Wi-Fi is convenient, but itās not the place to access tax documents, banking, or financial accounts.
⢠Back up important data. Having a recent backup ensures that even if something goes wrong, your information isnāt lost.
If your computer has been running slowly, behaving unexpectedly, or hasnāt been checked in a while, it may be more than just age. Performance issues can sometimes be early warning signs of deeper problems.
Taking a little time now to secure your system can help prevent data loss, downtime, and much more expensive issues later.
