One of the earliest known uses of the word "morgage" appears in John Gower's Confessio Amantis. Interestingly, it wasn't about buying a home. Gower used the term when discussing marriage vows, portraying them as a serious pledge that should be honored.

Mortgage rates ended the week higher.

All eyes were on CPI and PPI this week and both beat expectations. Headline CPI +0.1% MoM, +3.4% YoY. Core CPI +0.2% MoM, +2.5% YoY. Headline PPI +0% MoM, +4.7% YoY. Core PPI +0.2% MoM, +4.2% YoY.

Energy prices falling a seasonally adjusted -1.5% MoM was the biggest surprise. The least surprising and largest falling item in the CPI report was lettuce, falling -16.4% MoM (thank you Cyclospora).

Rate hike odds fell sharply after both inflation reports this week, but October is still looking at a 50% chance of a hike after yields rebounded higher on Friday.

Existing Home Sales fell -1.7% MoM to an annualized pace of 4.06mm.

Retail sales fell -0.6% MoM. The World Cup giveth, the World Cup taketh away.

Mortgage rates ended the week lower.

Stop me if you have heard this beforeā€¦ Hormuz Strait to open under a 30 to 60 day ceasefire. Iran will control (and toll) ships entering the strait, Oman will be in charge of the outbound channel. Oil futures fell 7.6% this week after rising 21.8% for the month of July. The SPR saw another crude draw of 2.8mm barrels this week, but total reserves excluding the SPR rose 2.5mm. The deeper the draws on reserves, the less ability the country has to absorb continued price shocks from higher oil costs. Another incentive to reach a deal to open the Strait.

Non Farm Payrolls released what was initially a shocker today showing -23k jobs lost in July. Digging a little deeper into the report, government payrolls fell -53k while private payrolls grew 30k. And digging even deeper, ~40k of the private payroll job losses in Leisure and Hospitality were due to the World Cup coming to close. All in, a pretty great report that reduced rate hike odds, but did not cause panic in the market.

Next week we will see the July CPI and PPI inflation reports. Current Fed rate hike odds for September are 44%.
