Willow Oaks Building & Design Design and build beautiful and functional forever homes

A fireplace is usually the first thing people notice when they walk into a living room, and it's almost always the thing clients are most excited about during the planning process.

What we love about showing the full progression like this is that it gives people a real sense of how much goes into it before it ever starts looking like a fireplace. The framing stage looks like nothing. The drywall stage looks like a blank wall. And then somewhere between the flooring and the finishing details, it all clicks into place.

Getting to that finished result takes a lot of decisions made in the right order, and that's where having a builder who plans ahead really makes a difference. If you're in the early stages of thinking about a custom home, we're currently putting together our 2027 build schedule and would love to talk. Reach out at [email protected] to get on the waitlist.

How we stay transparent with our home build clients to make sure they know what's going into their home.

1. Regular construction walkthroughs - pre drywall, post dry wall, and beyond o you can see the blocking, and other details that get covered up and never seen again.

2. Honest timelines from day one. We'd rather tell you 3-4 months of planning upfront than rush into a build that costs you more later.

3. Regular project updates to keep you involved and informed every step of the way.

The quality you can't see matters just as much as what you can. We just make sure you get to see it anyway.

This land has been in the family for over 100 years. We're honored to be the ones building what comes next.

The Houston Estate project is officially underway. Demo is done, the lot is cleared, and in its place we're building a country-style estate home with a massive wrap-around porch.

This one is going to be something special. Follow along to watch it come to life from the ground up.

If you like the look of seamless door casing where you can't see the corner joints, here's how we achieve it.

We finish soft maple door casing onsite instead of using prefinished material. It lets us miter and glue the corner joints, then sand and paint them for a completely seamless, modern look. Once complete you shouldn't be able to tell where one piece ends and another begins.

We choose soft maple specifically for durability. It holds up against dents and scratches better than other trim materials like pine or MDF.

It's one of those details that might seem small, but it's part of what makes a custom home feel polished, intentional, and built to last for years to come.

The technique creates an incredibly clean finished product. That's your call on whether it fits your vision.

We don't take this lightly.

This home stood since 1860. This family has owned this land for over a century. And now we're tearing it down to build their new estate.

Here's the thing: honoring history doesn't always mean preserving the structure. Sometimes it means building something that serves the next hundred years of family memories on land that already holds generations of them.

This project isn't about erasing the past. It's about respecting what came before while creating something built to last just as long—but designed for how this family actually lives today.

If you're considering a custom build on family land or replacing a home that's seen better days, let's talk about how to do it right: [email protected]

There's a reason most builders use trim around door frames. It's easier to hide the messy drywall edges.

For this build, our clients chose a more elegant approach. We installed the white oak jams first, then finished the drywall perfectly flush against it. No trim needed. Just one clean, seamless transition.

It takes more precision and better craftsmanship, but the result is exactly the kind of modern, sleek look that our clients were looking for.

Would you go seamless like this, or stick with traditional trim?

Here's why we would hesitate to move forward with any builder who says they can break ground in 3 weeks.

10 weeks into your build you fall in love with a 48-inch built-in fridge. It doesn't fit the rough-in and the water line for the ice maker is not in the right spot. Your options: different fridge or a cabinet bump-out that breaks the sight line, and tearing out the drywall to move the plumbing. Expensive change order coming right up.

A few more weeks in, the shower valve gets installed. You haven't picked your tile yet, so the plumber uses the standard depth measurements. Weeks later, you choose beautiful stone tile but it's thicker than the standard depth. Now the tile sits proud of the valve trim and things aren't lining up right. Do you submit another change order?

16 weeks in and you finally find the perfect counter top to match the elegant wall-mount faucet for the master bath. But the plumber already set the rough-in based on standard countertop thickness. Your countertop only comes in one thickness - and it's not standard. Now the faucet sits awkwardly close to the counter. Can't be moved without undoing the drywall and piping. Is it something you can live with?

This is why we estimate 3-4 months in preconstruction planning before breaking ground.

It's important to get those specs locked in to minimize as many expensive change orders as possible. We can't always prevent every single one, but we sure can do our best to plan ahead.

Here's the thing: some builders won't tell you this upfront because it sounds overwhelming. But we'd rather you know what to expect than be blindsided halfway through.

1. You'll make thousands of decisions. Custom home building means choosing everything from foundation to fixtures. We help guide you through every decision so you feel confident, not overwhelmed. That's where a design-build partner makes all the difference.

2. Good planning takes months, not weeks. We usually prime our clients to expect a 3-4 month design process before we break ground, and here's why: rushing into construction without thorough upfront design and selections leads to change orders, expensive rework, budget creep, and compromise on your vision. Time invested in planning now = peace of mind later.

3. Quality takes time. We don't slap up materials to check a box. From hidden blocking and insulation to the finishes you'll see every day, every phase gets the attention it deserves. That's the difference between a builder grade house and a well designed home built to last.

The bathroom layout every parent with multiple kids should have.

This is a Jack and Jill style bathroom with two separate vanity areas with a door separating them from the toilet and shower room.

Why it works:
One person can shower while another can brush their teeth or do their make up without having to wait. No bottlenecks. No bathroom hogging. No waiting in the hallway.

Most builders default to a standard shared bathroom layout.

We worked with our clients to design this Jack and Jill bathroom with intentional space separation that fit their needs.
