A mansion and a McMansion may have similar square footage.
They may even have similar features.
But they were rarely created the same way.
Traditional mansions were often designed around a client, a site, and a vision. Architects, craftsmen, and artisans worked together to create details specifically for that home.
McMansions are typically designed around repeatable plans, proven products, and efficient construction methods that can be reproduced again and again.
The difference isn't always size. The difference is often the process.

A custom mansion often starts with a vision.
A McMansion often starts with a catalog.
Builders aren't usually asking, "What's the most beautiful solution?" They're asking, "Which product delivers the desired look, meets the budget, passes inspection, and can be installed efficiently?"
Windows. Doors. Flooring. Roofing. Cabinets. Countertops.
Modern homebuilding is often an exercise in selecting the best available product for a specific application. The result can be a perfectly good house—but one assembled from products chosen for performance, availability, and cost rather than custom craftsmanship.
That's one of the reasons McMansions feel different from traditional mansions.

One of the biggest misconceptions about McMansions is that they're built from "bad" materials.
Not necessarily.
Engineered wood, pre-finished moldings, stock cabinets, cultured stone, and manufactured flooring all exist for a reason: they're affordable, consistent, and efficient.
A true mansion often uses custom millwork, site-finished hardwoods, hand-crafted stonework, and bespoke architectural details made specifically for that home.
Neither approach is inherently wrong. They simply reflect different priorities, budgets, and construction methods.
Understanding that difference helps explain why two large houses can feel completely different.

For nearly a century, the Sunbeam Mixmaster followed the American kitchen through every major change.
What began as a company looking for ways to make life easier for farm families eventually found itself competing in a world of celebrity chefs, designer kitchens, and aspirational brands.
This is the moment everything changed.
And if you've got an old Mixmaster sitting on your counter, shelf, or in a cabinet somewhere, you may own a piece of that story.

Every extra day on a construction site costs money.
Interest on loans. Labor costs. Equipment rentals. Insurance. Materials.
Modern production builders learned that standard floor plans, engineered materials, and repeatable construction methods could build larger homes faster and more efficiently. That's not necessarily bad—it's one reason homeownership became accessible to more people.
But it also helps explain why McMansions often prioritize size and speed over craftsmanship and architectural detail.
In homebuilding, time really is money.

A McMansion may take months to build.
A true mansion may take years.
Why? Because many historic mansions were built with labor-intensive craftsmanship that simply can't be rushed. Hand-troweled plaster walls. Custom-built cabinetry. Stonework shaped on site. Architectural moldings milled specifically for that home. Skilled craftsmen spending days on details most people never notice.
McMansions use modern materials and production methods to build large houses quickly. Historic mansions were often created one detail at a time.
That's one reason a mansion feels different—even when the square footage is similar.
