This presentation, given by my former Architectural History Professor, Stephen Fox, detailed the evolution of modern and postmodern architecture in Houston and Texas, focusing on the works and influence of architects such as Mies van der Rohe, Philip Johnson, Howard Barnstone, and their collaborators. It highlighted significant buildings, exhibitions, and the cultural impact of these figures on the region's architectural landscape.

Key Figures

Mies van der Rohe: Modernist pioneer whose work influenced Houston's museum architecture.

Philip Johnson: Transitioned from modernism to postmodernism, shaping Texas' architectural identity.

Howard Barnstone: Noted for his modernist and later traditionalist works, teaching, and publications on Galveston and John F. Stahl.

John and Dominique de Menil: Patrons who shaped Houston's cultural and architectural scene.

James Johnson Sweeney: Museum director who promoted modernist installations and completed Mies' master plan.

In addition to the presentation, we enjoyed touring this beautiful historical site…. The architecture and interior decor of the times.
