quality and more accurate construction documentation Building Information Modeling (BIM) was introduce to its staff in 2003 and has become the wave of the future. Building information modeling (BIM) is a new way of approaching the design and documentation of projects. BIM allows our home designers to create, visualize and continually modify digital models of possible designs. A design can be represented with as little or as much detail as needed, showing any or all of a home’s many components and systems. And a model can be instantly edited, allowing unlimited numbers of variations to be studied. A designer can readily tweak a home’s geometry, roof shape or slope; floor plan and room configurations; wall thicknesses or ceiling heights; or door placements. With each tweak, the computer software immediately adjusts and displays the entire digital model to reflect the change. BIM supports a distributed team so that people, tools, and tasks can effectively share this information throughout the building lifecycle, thus eliminating data redundancy, data re-entry, data loss, miscommunication, and translation errors. Part 5: Inspired by Rome

With the groundbreaking complete, it was time to move into the final phase — developing the full construction documents.

As we continued refining the design, the client shared a specific vision for the large central gathering area. He wanted something that would reflect the beauty and character of what he had experienced in Rome — particularly the arches and statues that define so many of its historic spaces.

Immediately, one place came to mind.

The statues of the Twelve Apostles at St. John Lateran.

Their presence, scale, and rhythm create a powerful architectural experience — one that is both grounded and inspiring. It felt like the perfect source of influence for what we were trying to achieve.

From that point forward, the design began to take on a deeper meaning — not just as a building, but as a space shaped by memory, inspiration, and purpose.

What began as a simple sketch in Rome had now come full circle — returning to its roots in a way that would be permanently built into the design itself.

Part 4: From Rome to Groundbreaking

Just two weeks after returning from Rome, we stood on-site for the groundbreaking ceremony.

What had started as a simple sketch in a park…
refined over dinner conversations…
and shaped beside the Trevi Fountain…

…was now fully realized in a complete set of drawings, mounted and ready to present.

Seeing the plans displayed that day — not on a notepad, not across a café table, but on-site where the project would soon rise — was a powerful moment.

The vision had come full circle.

There’s something incredibly rewarding about bringing an idea to life under any circumstances — but especially one that began halfway across the world, under a tight timeline, and through a truly unexpected connection.

From a chance meeting in Rome…
to a real project breaking ground in Louisiana.

Sometimes, the most meaningful work begins when you least expect it.

Part 3: A Design Revealed in Rome

The next day, we found ourselves in the heart of Rome once again — this time seated near the Trevi Fountain, sharing a light lunch among the sounds of flowing water and passing crowds.

It was there that I presented the first front elevation.

Based on the floor plan concepts and the original sketches, my team in Houston had quickly transformed the ideas into something tangible — a design that could finally be seen, not just imagined.

We spread the drawings out on the table, reviewing every detail together. What had started as a simple notepad sketch just days before was now taking on form, character, and presence.

There’s a moment in every project when everything begins to click — when the vision becomes clear and the excitement sets in.

This was that moment.

From a park bench to dinner conversations to now, sitting beside one of the most iconic fountains in the world, the design had come to life faster than either of us could have expected.

And with the groundbreaking date quickly approaching, there was still more to be done.

Part 2: Ideas Take Shape in Rome

By the next day, my office had already sent over initial concepts.

That evening, over dinner in Rome, we spread the drawings out and began refining them together — making adjustments, discussing ideas, and shaping his vision. What started as a simple sketch on a notepad was quickly evolving into something much more defined.

There’s something unique about working this way — outside the office, in a completely different environment. It strips things back to the essentials and allows ideas to take shape in a more natural, collaborative way.

Once we had a clear direction, I sent everything back to my team in Houston to begin developing the exterior elevations.

What began as a chance conversation in a park was now becoming a real project — with a very real deadline fast approaching.

Part 1: A Chance Meeting in Rome

In August of 2025, I joined a group of pilgrims traveling to Rome, Italy, to celebrate the Jubilee, or Holy Year.

During a rest stop in a quiet park, I noticed one of the men in our group sitting on a bench, sketching something in a small notepad. Naturally, I was curious. I introduced myself and asked what he was working on.

He told me he was sketching plans for a new rectory for his home parish in Louisiana.

As the president of Lifestyle USA Design, a residential design firm based in Houston, I couldn’t help but ask if I could take a look. After studying his sketches for a moment, I mentioned that I might be able to help refine the plans.

That’s when he shared something surprising — the groundbreaking ceremony was only two weeks away, and he needed drawings ready to present. I immediately sent photos of his concept sketches to my office in Houston.

Sometimes the most interesting projects begin in the most unexpected places.
