“Whatever our individual troubles and challenges may be, it’s important to pause every now and then to appreciate all that we have, on every level. We need to literally “count our blessings,” give thanks for them, allow ourselves to enjoy them, and relish the experience of prosperity we already have.” — Shakti Gawain

“The moment one gives close attention to anything, even a blade of grass, it becomes a mysterious, awesome, indescribably magnificent world in itself.” — Henry Miller

“Gratefulness is the key to a happy life that we hold in our hands, because if we are not grateful, then no matter how much we have we will not be happy — because we will always want to have something else or something more.” — Brother David Steindl-Rast

“Happiness cannot be traveled to, owned, earned, worn or consumed. Happiness is the spiritual experience of living every minute with love, grace and gratitude.” — Denis Waitley

If you've ever had the privilege of preparing the Thanksgiving feast for your family and friends, chances are you've run into one or more of the following problems:

-Flat mashed potatoes (not fluffy)
-Lumpy gravy
-Frozen turkey, not thawed in time to prepare
-A dry turkey

Mashed Potatoes Quick Fix:
Add a half cup of sour cream for every three pounds of potatoes. The added volume makes them fluffier after you beat them.

Lumpy Gravy Quick Fix:
Use a strainer to remove the lumps or just pour the lumpy gravy into a blender and blend for a few seconds.

Frozen Turkey:
Wrap the turkey tightly in a plastic bag and submerge the bird in a sink or tub of cold water. Replace the water every hour. Allow 30 minutes of thawing time per pound.

Dry Turkey:
Try cooking the turkey breast down for the first few hours. Halfway through cooking, turn the turkey over and place a foil "tent" over the breast to block it from direct heat while periodically ladling the breast with broth or butter. Allow it to cook breast up for the remainder of the time.

In 1969 the show known now as Sesame Street aired for the first time. It's now in its 45th season and is the longest-running children's program in the U.S. The program is known for its educational content, and images communicated through the use of Jim Henson's Muppets, animation, short films, humor, and cultural references. By its 40th anniversary in 2009, Sesame Street was the fifteenth-highest rated children's television show in the United States. A 1996 survey found that 95% of all American preschoolers had watched the show by the time they were three years old. In 2008, it was estimated that 77 million Americans had watched the series as children. As of 2014, Sesame Street has won 159 Emmy Awards and 8 Grammy Awards—more than any other children's show. Originally, Sesame Street was going to be called 123 Avenue B until someone realized that this was a real New York City address! Sesame Street airs locally on Channel 8 at 10 a.m., Monday- Friday.

In recent years, perhaps coinciding with the decline in prescriptive hormone replacement therapy after menopause, there has been a gradual reduction in female breast cancer incidence rates among women aged 50 and older. Death rates from breast cancer have been declining since about 1990, in part to better due to screening and early detection, increased awareness, and continually improving treatment options.

Knowledge is Power!

Did you know?:
-One in eight women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime.
-Breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer in women.
-Breast cancer is the second leading cause of death among women.
-Each year it is estimated that over 220,000 women in the United States will be diagnosed with breast cancer and more than 40,000 will die.
-Although breast cancer in men is rare, an estimated 2,150 men will be diagnosed with breast cancer and approximately 410 will die each year.

Early detection is key in the fight against breast cancer. Even with breast cancer related deaths on the decline, until there is a cure, the threat is still very real for many women and men.

Did you know that filming of The Seven Year Itch in 1954 required Marilyn Monroe to stand over a subway grate and let her white skirt blow up around her. It took more than 40 shots before the now iconic image was deemed just right!
