Magnificat Houses, Inc. A welcoming community where those needing housing, food and mental health programs can stabilize and grow in productivity and independence.

Magnificat offers refuge and hope to the destitute by creating homes where people of different mental abilities, social backgrounds, religions and cultures, live together in community. Community is our greatest strength, and through community we strive to reveal the special value that each person has to offer the other. We are dedicated to the conviction that recovery is possible in a family-style setting that offers hope, respect, opportunity, work, a good home, education and friendship.

Quiet Sunday on the calendar, which is its own kind of gift after the week we just had. Twenty fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time, and ordinary is the point. Most of what changes a life here is not an event, it is the fifth conversation with the same case manager, the tenth time somebody shows up for group, the meal that was there again today.

Every other month, Sandy Embesi and His Disciples Cooking Ministry fires up the grill while volunteers from St. Mary’s Chapel at Rice University prepare sides, share fellowship, and serve lunch. It’s always a feast and a favorite day for our community.

Heads up for tomorrow. Harris County Gold Card and SNAP sign up runs Friday from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m., so if you have been meaning to get enrolled, that is your window.

Today a new Getting Ahead cohort starts classes at 10, Empowering Women meets with Julie, Peer to Peer for Men meets with Albert, and Bingo Night takes over from 5:30 to 7.

The Church offers Saint Hildegard of Bingen as an option today, a woman who taught, wrote, healed, and made music, which is roughly the range of what fits into one of our Thursdays.

Staff and board members sat down over breakfast to share the great achievements Magnificat Houses had made in the third quarter. Also, the meals, housing, and the Clubhouse goals we look toward to meeting in the fourth quarter and what finishing the year well actually asks for each of us.

Today the Church remembers Our Lady of Sorrows, the mother who did not leave. That is close to the whole job description for a lot of the

National Hispanic Heritage Month also begins today, and we think of Sisters Maria, Magdalena, and Gabina, who came from Guatemala and have spent twenty years at our intake center greeting whoever walks through the door first.

Meanwhile the ordinary good keeps moving, Crafting Corner at 10:30, Bread of Life food pantry and laundry day at 11:30, and art class with JoAnna at 1:30.

Every day at MHI looks a little different, but the goal stays the same. We're here to serve our neighbors experiencing homelessness and hardship with dignity and compassion. It takes a whole community of donors, volunteers, and partners to keep that going.

That includes our growing partnership with the University of Houston Nursing and Optometry Clinics, bringing even more care to our community health fairs. We're thankful you're part of ours.
