I’m an immigrant proudly born in Mexico🇲🇽
My kids are first-generation Americans, and for years my family and lots around us have been quietly protesting in the way we live, work, and show up for our community.
Now, I’m inviting you to join us with intention.
Here are 5 things you can do right now when you’re feeling helpless:
1. Check on your people.
Some are carrying grief, fear, and frustration quietly. A simple “How are you really?” can remind someone they’re not alone.
2. Hold on to culture.
Speak your language. Cook the meals you grew up with. Tell the stories that shaped you. Our joy, our roots, and our traditions are resistance. Don’t let anyone take that from you.
3. Take action even if it feels small.
This might look like helping someone navigate paperwork, sharing resources, offering to make a phone call for someone who struggles with English, etc. Do what you can with what you have. It all counts.
4. Keep learning.
Educate yourself. Grow. Stay curious. The more you know, the more you can do for your community and for the next generation. Never stop leveling up.
5. Step aside.
Step aside if you’re not here for the right reasons. If you’re quick to check bilingual on your resume, but never show up for our people you’re part of the problem. We don’t need performative support. We need action.
We’re not powerless. We never have been. Now more than ever, we need each other. So show up. Speak up. And stand firm in who you are.
