Facts… I know this to be true

1. Traffic will get worse before it gets better.
I-45 will still be under construction and we’ll continue pretending leaving 15 minutes earlier will solve the problem.
2. The “far suburbs” won’t feel so far anymore.
Katy, Fulshear, Cypress, Tomball, Conroe… Houston is going to keep doing what Houston does. Spreading out until yesterday’s outskirts become tomorrow’s suburbs.
3. One of our teams will break our hearts again… and we’ll immediately convince ourselves next year is the year.
Astros, Texans, Rockets. Doesn’t matter. Houston sports fans have an unbelievable ability to go from “I’m done with this team” to “we’re winning it all” in about 48 hours.
4. Half the restaurants we love will disappear and 100 new ones will take their place.
We’ll complain about the old place closing, swear the new place isn’t as good, then wait 45 minutes for a table there six months later.
5. People will keep complaining about Houston while refusing to leave it.
The traffic. The heat. The humidity. The mosquitoes. The construction.

And somehow we’re still here.

Because for all the crap we give this city, Houston is home.

And I’d still pick it.

I’ve spent most of my life here and 18 years helping people buy and sell homes around Houston.

September… bless your heart, you try!

TX… 100 degrees is almost over.

Which means the best time of year in Texas is right around the corner.

Football is back.

Patios become usable again.

The mosquitoes go from absolutely unhinged to just mildly disrespectful.

You can finally walk outside without immediately regretting it.

Chili goes back into the dinner rotation.

Friday night high school football.

Hunting season.

Fire pits and backyard hangs.

Golf without questioning every life decision by hole 7.

The State Fair.

Pumpkin patches where it’s somehow still 87 degrees.

That first random 58° morning when every Texan pulls out a jacket like we’re surviving an Arctic front.

Opening the windows for approximately 11 days.

And of course, false fall… followed by second summer… followed by another false fall.

But eventually, that first REAL cool front hits.

And Texas becomes pretty damn hard to beat.

There’s a reason I’ve always loved living close to the heart of Houston.

For me, it’s being able to grab coffee at a local cafe, meet someone for lunch in the Heights, catch an Astros game after work, or decide last minute to go out to dinner without making an entire evening out of the drive.

It’s Saturday mornings at Memorial Park. Restaurants that aren’t corporate chains. Museums on a Tuesday and Neighborhoods with old trees, character and homes that don’t all look the same. And having most of what you enjoy about Houston within 15 or 20 minutes.

Growing up in Houston I’ve realized you don’t necessarily have to choose between having a little more room and still feeling connected to the city.

That’s probably my favorite thing about Houston.

You can find a bungalow in the Heights, a bigger yard in Garden Oaks, something more established around Memorial, or even pockets farther west where you can still get into town pretty quickly.

If you’re moving to Houston and the thought of living 40 or 50 minutes outside the city just isn’t for you, I get it.

There are a lot of great places to live here where you can have more space without giving up the Houston lifestyle you moved here for.

Eating out with kids hits different.

Now we’re looking for good food, a casual atmosphere, room for the kids, and a place where nobody gives you the death stare when your table gets a little loud.

We all have that one friend or family member…

And if you’re the one who’s been saying

“one day we’ll move back to Houston” for YEARS…

I get it.

Because moving back isn’t as simple as packing a U-Haul and heading south.

Jobs change. Kids start school. Life gets busy.

And somehow “one day” turns into five years.

But imagine your regular life looking a little more like this again.

Friday night means Tex-Mex, chips and salsa before you even order.

Saturday morning you’re at your kid’s game in shorts while your friends up north are scraping ice off their windshield.

You swing through Whataburger because… obviously.

You have H-E-B five minutes away.

The Astros are on.

Your family is closer.

And you remember that driving 30 minutes in Houston is basically considered “right down the road.”

Is Houston perfect?

Absolutely not.

It’s hot. It’s humid. The traffic will test your faith.

But there’s a reason so many people leave Texas…

and spend the next few years talking about coming back.

Maybe “one day” is getting a little closer.

You accepted the job in Houston. Congrats.

Now comes the unknown… what’s it going to be like?

If you’re thinking about moving to Houston… here’s what you should really know:

1️⃣ It’s big. Like, really big.
Houston is the largest city in Texas, so no, you probably won’t live “close to everything.” Your favorite coffee shop or friend might be a 30-minute drive away, but that’s just how it is here.

2️⃣ The vibe changes depending on where you live.
Inner Loop life feels totally different from The Woodlands, which feels totally different from Sugar Land. You’ve got to figure out what you want in a neighborhood, because no two parts of Houston are the same.

3️⃣ Public transportation isn’t great.
This is a driving city. If you’re used to walkable metros or reliable transit, you might be in for a culture shock. That said, a lot of people love having the space and freedom that come with suburban-style living.

4️⃣ It’s expanding from North to West to Southwest, but still figuring things out. From new developments in Waller to revitalization in East Downtown and Spring Branch, HOU is constantly evolving. But with that comes construction, traffic, and neighborhoods that feel halfway finished. Construction will never end, so get used to it.

So why do people still move to Houston?

Because it offers something different.

You move here for opportunity and space. And for that balance between laid-back charm and up-and-coming. You don’t have to trade off affordability or square footage to stay close to work, sports, or daily life.

From year-round sports, zoo, museums, and weekend adventures to the coast, families can stay active even in the Winter.

If you’re okay with trading a little convenience for a lot more life, Houston might just be for you.

A lot of families don’t move to Houston just for a new job.

They come for the opportunity, warmer winters, more space and a chance to build a pretty great life here.

some of my personal favorites are…

✅ Late October: baseball postseason, Texans on Sundays, hunting season begins, cooler temperatures and no mosquitoes

✅free chips and salsa

✅ Houston Live Stock show & Rodeo

✅ Golf year round

✅ commute to work against traffic

✅ variety of food options

Once you figure Houston out, there’s a lot worth the hype.
