The truth is…

my wife and I didn’t want to leave The Heights.

We loved the walkability. The charm. Being in the middle of everything. A 7 min uber ride to the Astros game on a Friday night.

It felt like home.

But once our son started getting older, one thing mattered more than anything else: schools.

For us, that meant Spring Branch ISD.

Houston has some incredible options for early childhood education, but when we started thinking about middle school and high school, our priorities shifted.

What surprised us wasn’t just the schools.

It was the community.

a neighborhood that felt like the ones we grew up in, in the early 90s. Bikes in the front yards. Parks are full. Families stick around. It felt like the kind of place we wanted our kids to grow up.

Everyone’s priorities are different, and that’s okay.

convince me I’m wrong…

but I really think the secret to enjoying Houston… is actually living in Houston.

Not because the suburbs aren’t great. They absolutely are.

But if you love trying new restaurants, catching an Astros game on a Tuesday, walking to your neighborhood coffee shop, or it’s 7 p.m., you’re hungry, and your options aren’t limited to chain restaurants… it’s hard to beat.

The Heights. Oak Forest. Timbergrove. Memorial. West U. Bellaire. Spring Branch. Garden Oaks. Meyerland

Every neighborhood has its own personality, and that’s what makes Houston so interesting.

You don’t just visit Houston.

You become part of it.

The commute gets shorter. Your weekends open up. You spend less time planning and more time actually doing the things that made you want to live here in the first place.

Now don’t get me wrong. If you want more land, top-rated suburban schools, or a quieter pace, I completely get it. That’s exactly why so many families choose Katy, Cypress, Sugar Land, Pearland, or The Woodlands.

There isn’t one right answer.

But if you want to experience everything Houston has to offer, I think you need to live close enough to actually enjoy it.

The drive matters too…

The house is only part of the decision.

One thing I’ve learned after helping hundreds of Houston families make a move is that a commute looks very different on paper than it does five days a week.

For some families, driving 40-60+ minutes each way is absolutely worth it.

The pros:
✅ More home for your money
✅ Bigger yards and newer neighborhoods
✅ Top-rated schools in many suburban communities
✅ More space for a growing family

The trade-offs:
👉 Less time with your kids each weekday
👉 More time sitting in Houston traffic
👉 Missing dinner, practices, or bedtime some nights
👉 More fuel, tolls, and wear on your vehicle
👉 Starting and ending your day with the stress of a long drive

There isn’t a right or wrong answer. Every family values different things.

My advice is simple: don’t just fall in love with the house. Fall in love with the lifestyle that comes with it.

Everyone assumes once you have kids, the suburbs are the only option.

Hard to believe this is Hole #10 at Memorial Park… 😂

jk… this is The Boulders in Arizona. Don’t come for me, Houston.

But honestly, Houston’s golf scene doesn’t get nearly enough credit.

Happy 713 Day. 🤘

If you remember when 713 was the only Houston area code, congratulations your back probably hurts too.

I grew up in H-Town when you actually memorized phone numbers because your phone couldn’t do it for you. I still know my grandparents’ home number by heart.

Then Houston exploded… 281, 832, 346

But no matter what area code you have now, if you grew up here, you know Houston isn’t trying to impress anybody.

It’s a little loud.
A little humid.
A little rough around the edges.

And we wouldn’t have it any other way.

This city is built on:
✅ Diversity
✅ Culture
✅ Opportunity
✅ Family
✅ Incredible food
✅ Faith
✅ People who work hard and look out for each other

Houston isn’t perfect, but it’s real. Different backgrounds, different stories, different cultures… and somehow it all just works.

That’s why I’ll always be proud to call this place home.

Happy 713 Day to everyone who’s Houston through and through.

Reality is…

The townhouse that fit your life 5 years ago… no longer does

I see it happen all the time.

You get married.
Have a couple of kids.
The dog gets bigger.

Now you’ve got 4 baby gates between the first floor and the third.

The toys have taken over.

Every closet is packed.

You’re carrying a baby, groceries, and a diaper bag up two flights of stairs while trying not to trip over the dog.

The home office that once worked is now the breakfast table.

This was us, and I forgot to mention the yard that only fits two Adirondack chairs and a weber grill isn’t cutting it.

At some point, you realize… you’ve outgrown the house.

The reality is, not everyone wants or can afford a $1M+ home just to stay in the inner loop to get it all. And for a lot of families, the suburbs offer something that’s hard to ignore.
