Proportions are very important when arranging furniture in your home.

Side tables should be around the same height as the sofa or chair arm. If the sofa is armless, the adjacent side table should look balanced relative to the sofa or chair's back - generally, the height should not exceed 8' above the seat.

3 Decorating mistakes you don't even know you are making.

1)Decorating mistake : The scale is totally off.
Scale is essentially how objects in a room relate to each other in terms of their size. When the scale of furniture or decor in a room is off, it messes up the entire flow of the room. Have you ever seen a tiny family room with an oversized sectional in it? Or a huge expanse of wall with one tiny picture hinged in the middle of it? Yep, those are examples of what not to do when it comes to scale.

2)Decorating mistake : All of your furniture is pushed up against the walls.
One of the space planning mistakes I see most often is that people push all of their furniture up against the walls hoping to make the room feel bigger but it actually makes the room feel disconnected and unwelcoming.

3)Decorating mistake: Your wall decor is all wrong.
When it comes to what to hang on walls, the art is too small or is hanging way too high. You want to the scale to be proportional to the furniture that they are near.

Space planning, which impacts scale, is essential. People often use furniture that is too large or too small for a space.

Build around the furniture that you actually have space for. Think about the balance of a space. For larger rooms, consider establishing zones for different activities: a seating area that is conducive to conversation; another area for television viewing; a work area with a desk or table for projects or games

Think about the visual weight and distribution to balance out a space. Proportion and scale are key to any design.
