During the off-season before my sixth run with the Pittsburgh Steelers, Chuck Noll, the quiet legend, decided to call it a career. I can still remember the shockwaves his retirement sent when the news broke.

After Chuck left, there was this different vibe about where the team was headed. Trust me, we all felt it. We were still this young group, but here's the kicker – we'd all been molded into football pros by the absolute BEST, no less. All we needed now were the right moves, and we'd be golden.

We were all in the dark about who'd be the next head coach. And to be honest, I kinda pitied the poor soul before we even met him. How on earth do you fill Chuck Noll's shoes?

And then, the big announcement landed – Bill Cowher was the guy! I had mixed emotions initially, but Bill not only worked with the players we already had on the team, he intuitively recognized the strength of the team and built on that.

On his first day with the entire team, he said to us, "I want you to understand one thing: my job is to get your ready for Sunday, and in order to do that, we are not going to beat each other up Wednesday through Friday. We will practice with a quick tempo and we will hit, but I will take care of you during the week. Your job is to take care on me on Sunday.

At that very moment, it dawned on me that we had once again discovered a perfect match for Pittsburgh!
