Are you prepared? Hurricane Season starts June 1st!
This week-May 5th thru May 11th is Hurricane Preparedness week and I have your checklist for you and your family to be prepared. It is predicted that we will have 4-7 major hurricanes this season.
1. Create an Emergency Plan:
Develop a family emergency plan that includes evacuation routes, meeting points, and contact information.
Practice the plan with your family to ensure everyone knows what to do in case of an emergency.
2. Prepare an Emergency Kit:
Assemble a hurricane emergency kit that includes essential items such as non-perishable food, water, medications, flashlights, batteries, first aid supplies, and important documents.
Keep the emergency kit in a designated location that is easily accessible in case of evacuation.
3. Secure Your Property:
Inspect your property for any areas that may need repairs or reinforcement, such as loose shingles, damaged windows, or weak structures.
Trim trees and bushes around your property to minimize the risk of falling branches during a storm.
Install hurricane shutters or board up windows and doors to protect against high winds and flying debris.
4. Review Insurance Coverage:
Review your homeowner's insurance policy to ensure it provides adequate coverage for potential hurricane damage.
Consider purchasing flood insurance if you live in a flood-prone area, as standard homeowner's insurance typically does not cover flood damage.
5. Protect Important Documents:
Store important documents such as identification, insurance policies, deeds, and financial records in a waterproof and portable container.
Make digital copies of documents and store them securely online or in the cloud for easy access in case of evacuation.
6. Protect Outdoor Items:
Secure or bring indoors any outdoor furniture, decorations, or equipment that could become projectiles in high winds.
Anchor down or store any boats, vehicles, or recreational vehicles to prevent damage during a storm.
