Stay safe, Houston! With Winter Storm moving through the area, we’re looking at several days of freezing temperatures and dangerous wind chills. Whether you’re winterizing your home or helping out a neighbor, now is the time to prioritize the “Four Ps”: Pipes, Pets, Plants, and People.
To stay warm and prepared:
Protect Your Home: Wrap outdoor faucets, disconnect hoses, and open cabinet doors under sinks to let warm air reach your indoor plumbing.
Safety First: If you use a space heater, keep it at least 3 feet away from furniture or blankets and plug it directly into the wall. Never use a gas oven or stove for heat, as it poses a major carbon monoxide risk.
Layer Up: If the power goes out, wear multiple layers of loose-fitting, warm clothing and gather in one central room to conserve body heat.
If you or someone you know cannot stay warm at home, the City of Houston and Harris County have opened several 24/7 warming centers starting today, Saturday, January 24. Most provide snacks, water, and blankets.
Note: Many YMCA locations and local libraries are also operating as daytime warming centers. Please check with 3-1-1 for the most up-to-date availability and transportation assistance.
