The Mont Belvieu area is known historically for sitting atop the Barbers Hill salt dome, which transformed the area from a 19th-century farming settlement into the largest underground storage hub for liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) in the United States and a vital national petrochemical pricing point.

Early Settlement and Barbers Hill

Amos Barber: Settled the high ground in 1849, establishing a homestead that led the area to be known as Barbers Hill.

Name Change: Postal authorities changed the name to Mont Belvieu (French for "beautiful hill") in 1890 to avoid confusion with other regional post offices.

Early Economy: Functioned primarily as a quiet farming and cattle-raising community through the late 1800s.

Oil and Gas Boom

1918 Oil Discovery: Commercial oil production began at the Barbers Hill oilfield, bringing rapid industrialization.

Salt Dome Storage: Drillers realized the hollowed-out caverns inside the massive underground salt dome provided ideal, secure storage for petroleum products.

National Market Hub: Evolved into the primary pricing indicator location for the U.S. LPG market.Relocation and Modern EraTown Move: Safety regulations and industrial expansion on top of the dome caused the original town center to relocate downhill toward Eagle Drive in the late 20th century.
