Kemah Boardwalk Announces Family-Friendly Expansion with "Boardwalk Bay Water Park"

The Kemah Boardwalk is continuing to cement its status as a premier, family-oriented destination in the Clear Lake and Houston area with a major upcoming expansion.

In 2027, the popular entertainment complex will debut Boardwalk Bay Water Park, a brand-new attraction designed around a pirate and shipwreck theme.

Situated directly across from the Boardwalk Inn, the new waterfront park will repurpose the former Joe's Crab Shack site. According to recent filings with the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation, Landry's Inc.—the Tilman Fertitta-owned company that operates the boardwalk—initiated the project by investing an estimated $435,000 to convert the former restaurant into the water park's primary entrance building. Landry's further solidified its plans by applying for the "Boardwalk Bay" trademark in March of 2026, signaling that the water park is intended to be a permanent, long-term fixture rather than a temporary pop-up.

While a firm opening day in 2027 and a specific ride-by-ride lineup have yet to be announced, officials have confirmed that the compact, family-focused park will feature eight distinct rides. This will include various slides, splash features, and a dedicated kids' play cove tailored for younger visitors.

Kemah Boardwalk officials highlighted the project's alignment with the destination's ongoing family-friendly direction, expressing excitement over bringing a new level of energy and entertainment to the property.

For visitors planning a trip to the boardwalk in the near future, the ongoing development will not hinder the guest experience. Landry's Inc. and park management have assured the public that construction is being carefully phased; all current restaurants, midway games, and amusement rides will remain fully open and operational as Boardwalk Bay is built.

Kemah and WCID12 Election Results: Voters Signal a New Direction

Based on unofficial results, the recent election for the City of Kemah and Water Control and Improvement District No. 12 (WCID12) have sent a clear message regarding the community's future. With key races decided and a significant bond measure rejected, the outcome reflects a shifting tide in local governance priorities.

Despite a lower voter turnout, those who headed to the polls echoed sentiments seen in recent general elections: a focus on fiscal responsibility, transparency, and resident-centric development.

City Council Election Highlights
The City Council will see a mix of new and returning faces as voters weighed in on the future of major municipal projects, including the proposed City Center and large-scale residential developments.

-Position 1: Shelia Thorne has won the seat, defeating Shawn Williamson.
-Position 3: Darren Broadus ran unopposed and will assume a position on the council.
-Position 5: Robb Rourke emerged victorious over longtime incumbent Isaac Saldana.

WCID12 Board and Bond Outcome
The local water district saw equally impactful results, particularly regarding long-term infrastructure funding.

New Leadership: Thomas Langford and Peyton Lumpkin have been elected to the WCID12 Board.

Bond Measure Defeated: The multi-million dollar bond proposal, championed by board member Robert Kelly, failed to pass. While proponents argued the bond would not impact taxes, voters signaled a preference for avoiding long-term debt and seeking alternative ways to fund expansion.

What This Means for Kemah Residents
The core themes of this election cycle were accountability and strategic growth. Interviews with local voters and the results themselves suggest four primary expectations for the incoming leaders:

1. Fiscal Transparency: A demand for clear communication regarding how large projects—like the $70+ million City Center—impact the city’s debt profile.
2. Developer Partnerships: A desire to ensure that expansion costs are shared fairly with developers rather than resting solely on the taxpayers.
3. Resident-First Policy: Prioritizing the needs and quality of life of current Kemah and Clear Lake Shores residents over rapid commercial expansion.
4. Reduced Litigation: A move away from complex legal battles and toward a clearer, more collaborative vision for city development.

Looking Ahead
As these new officials take their seats, the community will be watching to see how the promises of honesty and vision are translated into policy. The rejection of the WCID12 bond, in particular, highlights a public that is increasingly cautious about "future debt" and expects a more conservative approach to infrastructure spending.

Thank you to the residents of Kemah and WCID12 for participating in the democratic process and making your voices heard.

What are your thoughts on the election results? Whether you're concerned about the future of the City Center or looking forward to a new approach at WCID12, let us know what priorities you want the new council and board to tackle first.
