What’s New Wednesday: Traffic Changes Around Uptown & ISU

If you’ve noticed a few changes around Uptown Normal and the ISU campus, there’s a reason.

Normal and ISU are testing seven temporary pedestrian and traffic-safety projects this fall, including new crosswalks, traffic-calming measures, a two-way bike lane and a temporary street closure near campus.

The idea is to test some changes, see what works, and use that information to help shape future improvements.

So, for the next few months, the usual route may not be quite so usual.

Getting a mortgage is easier when you know what you’re getting into.

Check your credit, know your budget, keep your finances steady, have your documents ready, and talk to a lender early.

Basically, do some homework before buying the homework. 🏡

Think Green Thursday 🌿: Have you heard of a food forest? The Refuge Food Forest in Normal is a great local example of sustainable landscaping in action.

Food forests use layers of edible plants, including fruit trees, berries, herbs, and other perennials, to create a space that can provide food while supporting local wildlife and the surrounding ecosystem.

If you're looking for a different way to think about landscaping, the Refuge Food Forest is worth checking out!

If you’ve driven around Illinois State’s campus lately, you’ve probably noticed there’s a lot happening.

The new College of Engineering facility is welcoming students, while construction is moving forward on the $87 million transformation of the Wonsook Kim College of Fine Arts. That project includes a new Commons Building, additions to the Center for Visual Arts and Center for Performing Arts, and renovations to existing spaces.

And there’s more on the way. ISU is also moving forward with plans for a new Science Complex.

Between engineering, fine arts, and science, there’s a pretty noticeable amount of construction happening around campus, and a lot of it is setting up the next generation of Redbirds.

Know your cash to close before you get to the finish line. Numbers are fun. Usually.

Think Green Thursday: After all the recent storms, many homeowners are dealing with standing water, saturated yards, and water where it shouldn't be.

While we can't control how much rain we get, there are ways to better manage stormwater around your home. Keeping gutters and downspouts clear, directing water away from your foundation, adding native plants or a rain garden, and using rain barrels are a few options to consider.

Heavy rain can show us where our properties handle water well, and where there may be opportunities to improve drainage.

What’s New Wednesday: Bloomington-Normal Is Still Recovering

Last week’s storms may have passed, but the cleanup is far from over. Downed trees, damaged homes and businesses, flooding, and widespread power outages left plenty of work to be done.

Thousands of homes were without power for days as Ameren and Corn Belt Energy crews worked across Bloomington-Normal to restore service. Crews, contractors, and homeowners are still working through the damage and getting things back to normal.

A big thank-you to everyone who has been out there helping with the cleanup and repairs.
