Kickout flashing or diverter flashing is a specialty roofing component designed to redirect rainwater away from exterior walls and directly into the gutter system at roof to wall intersections. Without it, water will run down the roof line and leak behind the home's siding, causing severe wall rot, structural damage, mold, and exterior staining.

A gas flame appearing yellow or orange in color or behaving with pops of yellow or orange indicates an improper ratio of oxygen for combustion. Often this improper combustion is temporary and could be caused by dust particles or a dirty burner that needs cleaning. If, after cleaning, the flame continues to burn yellow or orange, this could be a more serious problem that requires professional help. Incomplete combustion could cause too much carbon monoxide (CO) to be produced!

Did you know that our TREC Standards of Practice require us, as Home Inspectors, to report improper use of extension cords during a Home Inspection?

According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) and the Electrical Safety Foundation, roughly 3,300 residential home fires originate from extension cords each year in the United States. These fires cause about 50 deaths and 270 injuries annually.

Improper use of extension cords is something we have to report on frequently. Extension cords are not meant to be used as permanent wiring, but only temporary use, because they are prone to overheating.

We find large appliances, like refrigerators and other appliances like garage door openers plugged in with extension cords. We find extension cords buried underground (which they are definitely not rated for) while being used as permanent wiring. These conditions are so dangerous and homeowners need to understand the risks!

Foundation footings must be installed below the frost line to prevent frost heave.

This condition occurs when moisture trapped in the soil freezes, expands, and exerts immense upward pressure. If footings sit above this line, seasonal freeze-thaw cycles will unevenly lift and drop the structure by exerting pressure below the base of the footing.

Just remember that wet soil exerts more pressure than dry soil and frozen soil exerts more pressure than wet soil. So...... frozen soil near the foundation is very bad!

The local frost line in Houston is 6 inches. By digging deep enough to reach the stable, unfrozen soil below the local frost line, the weight of the building should rest securely on earth that remains consistent year round.
