Termite swarm season is approaching. Here are 10 things you can do to prevent termites from showing up uninvited in your home:

1. Eliminate or reduce moisture in and around the home, which termites need to thrive.
2. Repair leaking faucets, water pipes, and exterior AC units.
3. Repair fascia, soffits, and rotted roof shingles.
4. Replace weather stripping and loose mortar around the basement foundation and windows.
5. Divert water away from the house through properly functioning downspouts, gutters, and splash blocks.
6. Routinely inspect the foundation of a home for signs of mud tubes (used by termites to reach a food source), uneven or bubbling paint, and wood that sounds hollow when tapped.
7. Monitor all exterior wood areas, including windows, doorframes, and skirting boards, for any noticeable changes.
8. Maintain an 18-inch gap between the soil and any wood portions of your home.
9. Consider scheduling a professional inspection annually. Homeowners insurance policies do not cover wood-boring insect damages.
10. Store firewood at least 20 feet away from the house.

If You Suspect Termite Infestation
Contact a licensed pest professional for further evaluation. Termite issues are not considered a do-it-yourself remedy and are best left to the professionals.

Here are a few tips to help prevent frozen pipes:

Keep Garage Doors Closed. Especially if there are water supply lines in the garage.

Open Kitchen and Bathroom Cabinet Doors. This will allow warmer air to circulate the plumbing, especially if your sinks are on an exterior wall.

Allow Cold Water to Drip from a Faucet. Running water through the pipe-even at a trickle - helps prevent pipes from freezing.

Adjust the Thermostat. Keeping your thermostat set at the same temperature day and night may help prevent frozen pipes.

Traveling During Cold Weather Months? Leave the heat on in your home, and set it to a temperature no lower than 55°F.

Add Insulation to Attics, Basements, and Crawlspaces for the Long Term. Insulation will maintain higher temperatures in those areas, And prevent drafts, seal cracks and openings around windows, doors, and at sill plates where the house rests on its foundation.
