Happy Juneteenth! 🎉✊🏾

What a time to be alive.

When I think about my birth and my lineage, I’m reminded of just how close we are to the roots of our history.

My great-grandfather lived to be 101. He passed in 1997, which means he was born around 1896 — just a little over 30 years after Juneteenth.

I don’t know much about his parents, but chances are they were either born into slavery or were the first generation born free. I wish I understood the weight of that when I was a kid sitting at his feet.

He still has living children today — a living, breathing reminder that this history isn’t distant. It’s personal. It’s ours.

This weekend, we’re coming together for our family reunion. Generations standing on the prayers and perseverance of those who came before us.

I am my ancestors’ wildest dream. ❤️💪🏾 ❤️🖤💚
