Before you buy a costume, take a look in your closet—and your recycling bin. There might be an award-winning outfit hiding between an old sweater and a delivery box. 🎃

These ideas work for adults, kids, or a whole group:

• A walking weather forecast. Add paper raindrops to a blue shirt and cut a cloud from cardboard. Someone else can wear yellow as sunshine, while your most dramatic friend becomes “severe weather.”

• A windblown commuter. Wear everyday clothes, button your cardigan crookedly, tousle your hair, and pin a scarf sideways across your shoulder. Carry a newspaper with crumpled pages. Your story? “It was perfectly calm when I left the house.”

• A museum masterpiece. Cut a lightweight frame from cardboard, decorate it with markers or paint, and hold it around your face. Add a scarf, borrowed hat, or fancy outfit and a label: “Portrait of Someone Who Needs More Coffee.” Kids can name their own artwork.

• The missing-sock detective. Wear mismatched socks, carry a notebook, and make a cardboard badge for the Laundry Investigation Bureau. Ask party guests whether they’ve seen your missing partner.

• A board game brought to life. Turn a cardboard panel into a game card: “Miss a Turn,” “Draw Two,” or “Go Back Three.” Let everyone choose a card and coordinate their clothes to match.

Lay everything out before attaching it, and use removable tape or a few loose stitches on clothes you want to wear again.

🍂Before the doorbell rings, give your home a little breathing room. Clear the counters, open the blinds, and turn on a few lamps. Fresh towels, empty trash cans, and tidy pet areas make a difference, too.

For a fall touch, a small pumpkin or a folded throw is plenty. Skip strong scents, tuck away valuables and medications, and take pets along when you head out.

Market Update.

Houston home sales are down, inventory is growing and properties are taking longer to sell. Here’s what it could mean for buyers and sellers.

10/03/2026

👻Halloween lands on a Saturday this year, so let’s give your guests an evening worth dressing up for!

Set the scene from the front door. Turn your entrance into a haunted hotel check-in, complete with room keys and a mysterious guestbook. Carry the theme inside with thrifted portraits, draped fabric, colored lighting, and a soundtrack of creaking doors and distant thunder.

Give guests a secret mission. Slip a challenge into each invitation or hand one out at arrival: get three people to howl together, work a strange phrase into conversation, or find the guest carrying a matching clue. Reveal the completed missions later for a few laughs.

Keep several activities going. Set up a photo corner with costume accessories, hide clues for a mini mystery hunt, and create a “name that spooky tune” challenge. Add costume awards for cleverest homemade outfit, best duo, and funniest character.

Make the menu part of the experience. Give dishes mysterious names and turn the drink table into a potion bar with labeled mixers and recipe cards. Browse Food Network’s Halloween collections for appetizers, desserts, and drinks that suit your crowd.

Bring everyone together for a finale. Finish the mystery hunt, announce costume winners, or have teams act out famous movie monsters while everyone guesses.

For supplies, explore Arne’s Warehouse for party goods, Craftex for seasonal decorations, and Texas Art Supply for DIY materials. Thrift shops can turn up unexpected props, serving pieces, and costume accessories, too. Target and Michaels are handy for filling in the gaps.

Recipe inspiration and shopping links are in the comments. Which sounds more like your crowd: a haunted hotel, a witches’ gathering, or a monster masquerade?

🍂 Houston may take its time cooling down, but fall gatherings are already on the calendar! A few small tasks now can help your home feel ready when friends and family arrive.

Give your entrance a seasonal refresh. Clean the porch lights, swap out a tired doormat, and add a wreath or planters in colors you love. Fall decorating doesn’t have to mean orange everywhere!

Create a reason to linger outside. Arrange comfortable chairs around a small table, add outdoor cushions and soft lighting, and keep a few throws nearby for cooler evenings. Make it your spot for morning coffee or evening drinks with friends and family.

Get the kitchen ready for company. Clean the oven, make room in the refrigerator, and pull out serving pieces. Try a new recipe now—you get a taste test before it makes the holiday menu.

Make overnight guests feel at home. Fresh bedding, a bedside lamp, an easy-to-find outlet, and a little basket of bathroom essentials make a thoughtful welcome.

Tackle the little fixes before the holiday rush. Replace burned-out bulbs, check your air filter, and take care of that loose handle or squeaky door you keep meaning to fix.

Looking for decorating inspiration? We’ve added links from HGTV and Better Homes & Gardens in the comments.

And once you’ve done your prep, relax and pour yourself a fall favorite. Give yourself time to enjoy the home you’ve made ready and look forward to visits from friends and family throughout the holiday season.

What’s your favorite way to spend a cooler fall evening?
