One of New York State's most stunnning natural wonders...the Peekamoose Blue Hole is a deep, crystal-clear pool along Rondout Creek, set at the foot of Peekamoose Mountain in the Catskills. Formed over many years as swirling sand and stone carved into the streambed, this round swimming hole stands out with glowing shades of blue and green that look almost unreal in the sunlight. The water reaches about 15 to 20 feet deep and stays ice cold all year, making it a refreshing escape during the hottest summer days. Flat shale ledges rise above the pool, giving people a place to sit or jump in, while mossy ground and thick forest surround the area. Just a short walk away, you’ll find the 50-foot Buttermilk Falls. From May through September, a $10 permit is required in advance to visit, helping protect this fragile and "well-loved" natural spot and keep it from becoming overcrowded on any given day. For those who secure a permit, the Peekamoose Blue Hole is one of the most beautiful and memorable places to spend a summer day in the wildnerness of NY!
