I went for a walk in our neighborhood today and a lady was watching her dog in the front yard. April was her name and she asked me if I wanted some tangelos. I thought about it for a second thinking it’s easy to just say “no thank you” but I gave it a second thought, when someone is offering you a gift you should say yes, so I did.
She invited me into her home, when I walked in she introduced me to a lady sitting in the living room. This woman’s name was Shirley and she looked a little surprised to see me. However, we had a nice conversation and she showed me a picture of April’s grand baby. April showed me to the backyard where I continued to pick some tangelos, then some lemons. She showed me pictures of her children and grandchildren who live in Colorado who she doesn’t see often. April was taking care of Shirley who has Alzheimer’s.
The purpose for this post was to remind us that the earth gives us all the food we need. And I realize it’s also a story of saying yes to neighbors who welcome you into their home, share their stories and are generous. Take some time to know your neighbors.
