A happy real estate client of any firm shows their appreciation. Google review. Zillow review. A referral or two. Most agents call that a win and spend the rest of their time figuring out how to stay relevant.

But our clients don't stop with the usual "happy client" stuff. They go out of their way to let us know that we made a difference.

Random texts.
Project updates.
Calls out of the blue...sometimes perfectly timed to remind us what really matters.

Sometimes weeks after close. Sometimes months. Sometimes years.

That's not a "client relationship." That's proof that what you did mattered to that client. That the client has written you into their life story in a way that cannot be erased. And that is worth more than all the email drip campaigns, holiday cards, pop-by visits with branded trinkets, and scheduled quarterly "checking in" calls combined.

Three days a week, she works from home — needs a separate workshop or oversized garage she can convert. At least an acre so the saws don't rattle the neighbors at 7am.

Last weekend her agent showed her four houses. All under half an acre. All standard 2-car garages. All HOA-tight neighborhoods where one bandsaw at sunrise means a letter by Tuesday.

She's explained this twice.

He keeps calling them "charming homes."

Charming doesn't cut dovetails. Listen to what your buyer actually does for a living.

Finding the right home during a relocation is one thing. Finding your "Village?" Well, that is a whole other thing.

Last week I had two clients — both had relocated to Huntsville, both navigating that strange in-between feeling of being somewhere new but not yet from somewhere new. You know the one. Where the house is signed and the boxes are unpacked but you still don't have anyone to call on a random Saturday night.

I noticed something in the way they each talked. Not about square footage or school districts — about life. What they wanted their weekends to look like. The kind of people they gravitated toward.

The version of Huntsville they were hoping to find.

They were compatible. Not in a real estate way. In a human way.
So I did something that isn't in any real estate manual. I started a group chat. Named it "Cool Transplants." Sent a quick intro — told each couple a little about the other and said I had a feeling they should meet.

They took it from there.

By the end of the week they had plans.

That's the part of this job nobody puts in the listing description. Huntsville is growing fast — people are arriving from everywhere, starting over, betting on this city. The least I can do is pay attention to who they are, not just what they're buying.

I had a "Final Walkthrough" yesterday afternoon. It happens before every closing. It's primary function is to make sure he house is in the condition it was at the time of contract and to verify that all requested repairs had been completed. All that had been accomplished in the first 10 minutes. We stayed for just over an hour.

My buyer lingered...walking slowly from room to room...imagining their life in their new home. They looked at each other...no words spoken, just absolute joy..."look at this incredibly cool thing we are about to do" felt like the right subtext.

Yes, earning (key word "earning") a commission is great. But those looks between the two of them is worth 10 times the the commission.

They aren't all like this...some have baggage from circumstance. Some have a healthy dose of bittersweet. But these are the ones that stick and provide more "why" about what we do than any monetary compensation.

I know how it feels to hear others rave about their new homes, help friends and family move, scroll homes late at night wondering when it'll be your turn.

But, the right home only comes when you're ready - financially, emotionally and practically.

The most responsible thing you can do is get yourself ready.
Then, your turn will come.
