⚡🏠 Why shouldn’t electrical service cables be touching your roof?
It might seem harmless, but electrical service cables should have proper clearance from the roof surface.
When a service cable is resting on or rubbing against the roof, it can create several concerns:
🔌 Damage to the cable — Constant contact with shingles, roofing materials, or sharp edges can wear down the cable’s protective covering over time.
🔥 Potential electrical hazard — Damaged insulation can expose wiring and increase the risk of electrical arcing or other dangerous conditions.
🏠 Roof damage — Cables that sit directly on the roof can rub against shingles and contribute to premature wear or damage.
🌧️ Water intrusion concerns — Damaged roofing materials can create pathways for water to enter the home.
👀 It’s a clearance issue — Electrical service equipment and conductors should be properly supported and maintained with appropriate clearances rather than resting on the roof.
The takeaway: If you notice electrical service cables laying on or contacting your roof, don’t ignore it. Have the condition evaluated by a qualified electrician.
