This tiny Elberta lunch spot has been feeding crowds for more than 25 years
You have to appreciate a restaurant confident enough to put the words “Roadkill Cafe” across the front of the building and just let people wonder.
A&G's Roadkill Cafe sits at 25076 State Street in Elberta, and the story behind that strange name is better than anything somebody could make up.
When the building was being prepared for business years ago, someone jokingly taped a “Roadkill Cafe” sign in the window. Owner Mike Williams later told Mobile Bay Magazine that the joke simply stuck. And no, the restaurant wasn't created to serve unfortunate wildlife collected from Baldwin County roads.
What it became instead was a small-town Southern lunch institution.
Alabama Living profiled the restaurant in 2019, when it was approaching its 20th anniversary. At the time, Williams explained that he had taken over running the place in 2005 after his father asked him to watch it while he went on vacation.
The restaurant became especially known for its fried chicken and country buffet. Traditional offerings have included pork chops, country-fried steak, vegetables, biscuits, gravy and banana pudding, with fish among the rotating selections.
Here's the part that really feels like old Baldwin County: this isn't an all-day operation.
Current 2026 listings show A&G's Roadkill Cafe operating only during a short lunch window, generally 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Monday through Saturday. The restaurant is still at the same State Street address and still serving its buffet.
So while everybody else is building enormous restaurants with rooftop bars and giant signs closer to the beach, Elberta still has a little place where you have roughly two and a half hours to get lunch.
Miss it and you're waiting until tomorrow.
Somehow, that makes Roadkill Cafe even more Baldwin County.
