People dressed in colonial-era clothing, waved flags, attended parades, and gathered for massive public events that transformed cities across the country. The footage captures a patriotic atmosphere that feels almost like a time capsule, showing families, communities, and entire towns embracing the Bicentennial spirit with enthusiasm rarely seen on such a scale.
The United States Bicentennial marked 200 years since the signing of the Declaration of Independence in 1776. Throughout 1976, celebrations took place nationwide, including tall ship gatherings, historical reenactments, concerts, and fireworks displays. The event became one of the largest national celebrations in American history, leaving behind iconic images that still spark nostalgia nearly fifty years later.

Credit to “Retreat? Hell, We Just Got Here!”

Today, we remember the legacy of Marines who fought at the Battle of Belleau Wood during World War I, helping to cement the Corps' reputation as the world's premier fighting force.

During the intense battle, the 4th Marine Brigade, comprised of the 5th and 6th Marine Regiments, and the 6th Machine Gun Battalion, fought aggressively through the wheat fields and woodlands in France, helping to stop a major German advance toward Paris in 1918. The Battle of Belleau Wood became a major turning point for the Corps, providing Marines with experience in large scale operations.

Legend has it that Marines were later called Teufel Hunden ("Devil Dogs" in German) due to the relentless tenacity while taking enemy positions during the battle. Because of the Marines’ unwavering commitment, the 5th and 6th Marine Regiments were awarded the French Croix de Guerre, an award presented to individuals or units for acts of valor and bravery on the battlefield.

Credit to Memorial Day. It’s one of the few holidays about absence. About the people we wish were here, but aren’t.

For many of us, the empty seats are real. Today asks something difficult of us: not simply to honor sacrifice, but to remember the people behind it. Today asks us to look grief in the face.

So call your buddies today, but don’t let today be the only day. Set a reminder in your calendar to reach back out on an ordinary day, too, when someone least expects it.

The empty seats around us deserve more than just one day of remembrance. Semper Fidelis.
