"This trail camera photo says a lot about the spring we've had.
A doe stands beside a full pond with two brand-new fawns at her side. Look close and you'll notice the rope scrape hanging over the water. That scrape was built for fall hunting season, and the pond is holding enough water today that scrape is covered.
Moisture creates opportunity. Full ponds, healthy native vegetation, abundant insects, and quality cover all play a role in helping fawns survive those critical first few months of life.
Everyone likes seeing big bucks on camera, but every mature buck starts exactly like this. A spotted fawn following its mother through quality habitat.
This is the time of year when the foundation for future deer seasons is being built. Good rainfall, healthy habitat, and strong fawn recruitment are what keep wildlife populations thriving across the Kansas countryside.
