Sometimes in this real estate career, a home purchase will require that I go the extra mile (or two) in order to best serve my clients. This was one of those times where I needed to step up and give my clients a full service PLUS experience. When I first got connected to them, Charles was in the hospital and Debra was getting things set up to be his power of attorney, so that she could start the home search and sign documents. They'd been lifelong renters, but Charles wanted to set Debra up with a home they could call their own. So we got to work.
I drove Debra to showings, and eventually to the bank a few times. They didn't use email, so I would set up my laptop in their kitchen to work through the mortgage to-do list with them. We signed everything in person and I made sure to explain everything to them as we went over the dozens of documents. They didn't have traditional income or credit situations, so their mortgage lending team and I walked through all of the different ways to get them their final loan approval.
We built up quite a relationship. There were frustrating moments, laughs, a lot of time spent explaining real estate terms, and in the end...a lot of gratitude for having been such a great team.
Along the way I learned all about their story, and their family, and a lot of things that I would never have heard about had I not been given the opportunity to sit together with them for as many hours as I had. While it was more work than a traditional home purchase, it was truly rewarding to help Charles and Debra become homeowners.
